How to Visit
1

Travel as a separate vehicle-based stop

Use a taxi, ride-hailing car, or self-drive to reach Zhenbeitai north of the old city. Do not add it to the Old Street, Ancient City, and Drum Tower walking route.

Tip:Plan the old-city walk and Zhenbeitai as separate parts of the day, with vehicle transport between them.
2

Buy a ticket and follow the main ascent route

Allow around 1.5-2 hours. The climb has steep steps, so leave time for breaks if mobility is limited.

Tip:Arrive before the 17:00 last-entry cutoff rather than treating the closing time as your arrival time.
3

Use the upper levels to understand the site

Take in the city, Great Wall remains, and surrounding terrain from the upper levels, then explore lower border-defence and trade-related remains according to your interest.

Tip:There is no need to rush through every corner for photos; the main value is the defensive setting and broad view.
4

Pair it with Hongshixia by car

If visiting both on the same day, make them a half-day route by car before returning to central Yulin for the old-city walking section.

Tip:Keep the driving time in the schedule rather than treating these stops as a seamless walk.
Highlights
  • A large Ming-era frontier platform that gives useful context for Yulin as a major border garrison.
  • Broad views over the city, plateau, and surrounding frontier landscape.
  • Steps, platform foundations, and surviving wall sections that make its defensive purpose easy to understand.
  • Historical links to nearby tribute-trade and horse-trade sites, showing the area's military and commercial roles.
Insider Tips

Budget CNY 30 for admission; bring relevant documents if using a concession or exemption.

The top is windy and exposed. Bring water, a hat, and a light outer layer even in summer.

Wear non-slip walking shoes; the steps are steep and unsuitable for hard-soled shoes or sandals.

Do not treat this as a continuous walk from the old city; plan vehicle transport between the two areas.

The 17:00 last-entry cutoff leaves little margin for a late afternoon arrival.
