How to Visit
1

Visit after the museum

See Shimao Museum first whenever possible; the objects, city plan, and chronology make the stone structures on site easier to understand.

Tip:The museum gives essential context before you see the archaeological site in the field.
2

Follow the open visitor route

Enter through the open visitor route and make the Outer City East Gate Site the main goal.

Tip:Archaeological work can change access to Huangchengtai and other areas.
3

Secure your return transport

Use a self-drive car, chartered vehicle, or another transport plan with a confirmed return.

Tip:Do not rely on finding a ride from the site at the end of the visit.
4

Finish with Gaojiabao if time allows

If Gaojiabao is also on the day's itinerary, visit it after the ruins as a lighter final stop.

Tip:A same-day return from Yulin covering the museum, ruins, and old town is best treated as a full day.
Highlights
  • The Outer City East Gate Site, with gates, platforms, and the defensive layout of the prehistoric stone city.
  • Large-scale stone walls that complement the museum collections rather than repeating the same experience.
  • Finds such as jade placed within walls that help explain Shimao's ritual and political world.
  • An open Loess Plateau setting that makes the scale and defensive logic of the site easier to grasp.
Insider Tips

Expect outdoor walking on exposed ground; bring grippy shoes, sun protection, and wind protection.

Do not build the visit around Huangchengtai or any other restricted area; follow the route open on the day.

Slow down to observe the structures rather than rushing through solely for photographs.

The museum and ruins are two separate stops, so allow time for each admission process, visit, and transfer.

If the weather turns poor or wind and dust increase, complete the main open area first and shorten outdoor time.
