How to Visit
1

Visit before the ruins

Put the museum before the Shimao Ruins and, where possible, at the beginning of the day.

Tip:It gives the archaeological site essential context before you see it in the field.
2

Reserve a free timed visit

Reserve through the museum's WeChat official account. It is open Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00-17:00, with last entry at 16:30, and closed on Mondays except public holidays.

Tip:Plan around the reservation, last-entry time, and closed day before setting the wider route.
3

Follow the exhibition narrative

Move from the city site and power structure to jade and stone carvings, then spend extra time with the divine-face carvings, jade objects, murals, and other key exhibits.

Tip:Allow around 1.5-2 hours for a visit that connects the objects with the site.
4

Continue to the ruins

Travel to the Shimao Ruins after the museum, allowing separately for admission and transport at each stop.

Tip:The museum is the key to understanding the ruins, but it is not simply one gallery within the ruins visit.
Highlights
  • A major introduction to China's largest known prehistoric city site, with many valuable objects dating back more than 4,000 years.
  • Divine-face stone carvings that reveal Shimao's distinctive visual symbols and ritual expression.
  • Jade, stone carvings, and murals that make the prehistoric city more tangible than walls alone.
  • Essential historical context for field areas such as the Outer City East Gate Site and Huangchengtai.
Insider Tips

The museum is south of Gaojiabao Town in Shenmu. A same-day return from Yulin combining the museum, ruins, and Gaojiabao is best planned as a full day.

The reservation requirement, last-entry time, and closed day affect the route order, so schedule the museum first in the morning.

If choosing only one stop, choose the museum for artifacts and context, or the ruins for the scale of the city and outdoor structures.

If the exhibition text feels technical, begin with the chronology and city model, then return to the key objects.

Visiting the ruins immediately after the museum gives the clearest overall understanding.
