A mountain destination for drivers
Luoding Wind Farm Ridge, also known as Yungaiding or Yapoji, is in Longwan Town, Luoding, Yunfu. There is no scenic-area admission charge, but the mountain road is listed at CNY 14 per car, CNY 24 for a large vehicle and CNY 3 for a motorcycle, paid by QR code on site. Holiday visitors may need to reserve through the “Longwan Wind Farm Ridge” WeChat account.
The mountain is open for vehicle access from 04:00–23:00 and closed from 23:00–04:00, when vehicles cannot enter or leave. From Luoding city, the drive takes about one hour and covers roughly 65 kilometres. The road has many bends and steep sections, and public transport does not reach the ridge, so a private car or hired vehicle is the practical option.
Half a day or one night of camping
A quick sunrise, sunset and turbine route takes about 3–4 hours. To photograph stars, wait for sunrise and walk the ridge, plan two days and one night. There is no complete commercial service area, so water, food, warm clothing and the condition of the vehicle all matter.
Cloud sea, stars and sunrise depend on the season and weather. They are more likely after autumn and winter rain, but no visit can guarantee them. Do not let a photograph of a cloud sea make you overlook the risks of night driving and cold-weather camping.

Sunrise, sunset and the turbines
Turbine 12 faces east and sits high on the ridge, making it suitable for sunrise. Turbine 23 faces west and is better for sunset. Turbine 1 is usually quieter for stars or a calm sunrise, while platforms near turbines 10 and 16 are more open for staying and camping.
The ridge, mountain road and turbines are the main scenery. Clouds vary greatly by season, weather and time of day, so sunrise, cloud sea, sunset and the Milky Way should be treated as weather-dependent options rather than promised results.
Who it suits, and who should take care
The ridge suits drivers with mountain-road experience, campers and landscape photographers. Visitors without night-driving experience, anyone who needs reliable supplies, or anyone uncomfortable with strong wind and low temperatures should not treat it as an easy weekend walk.
With children or older visitors, consider the cold, wind, road conditions and toilet facilities first. Drones are prohibited near the turbines, so the photography plan cannot depend on flying one.
Build your day
3–4 hours: sunrise and sunset route
Leave Luoding city → replenish food in Longwan Town → drive up the ridge and stop only in safe places → watch sunrise or cloud conditions at Turbine 12 → watch sunset at Turbine 23 → descend. If you plan both sunrise and sunset on one trip, check the closure time and the road conditions before setting off.
Vehicles can enter only after 04:00, so sunrise visitors must allow for the toll station queue and the mountain drive. If you arrive in the afternoon, make Turbine 23 and the road views the main plan instead of trying to find your way after dark.
Two days and one night: camping and the ridge walk
Go up in the afternoon, choose a suitable place near Turbine 10 or 23, photograph sunset and camp. Watch the stars, then go to Turbine 12 after the early-morning access period for sunrise before walking the ridge and descending to Longwan Ecological Area.
Do not camp directly below Turbine 12, where operating noise and wind are stronger and tent pegs are harder to secure. Keep clear of equipment and vehicle routes, and follow any instructions from staff on site.
About four hours: a quieter route
Navigate to Turbine 1 for stars or sunrise → Turbine 16 for the open mountain view → stop only in safe places along the mountain road for photographs → return by the same route. Never stop on a bend or in a place that blocks another vehicle, and keep a safe distance from the turbine equipment.
This route suits visitors who want to avoid the busiest platform. If cloud cover, visibility or wind is unsuitable, focus on the road and ridge scenery and do not enter a dangerous section to chase a view.
Get there
Drive up the mountain
Navigate to “Luoding Wind Farm Ridge Turbine 12” or “Turbine 23”. From Luoding city, the drive takes about one hour and covers roughly 65 kilometres. The concrete mountain road is passable by sedan, but it has steep grades, many bends and some narrow sections, so inexperienced drivers should take care.
Parking is generally possible near the turbine platforms, and staff direct vehicles around Turbine 12. During holidays, spaces fill quickly; arrive early or use an alternative platform such as Turbine 10. Descend in a low gear and use light braking to avoid overheating the brakes.
Non-driving options
There is no direct public transport. You need to arrange a hired car or shared vehicle from Luoding city; the listed journey takes about 1.5 hours. Non-drivers should agree in advance whether the driver will wait for the return, because you cannot rely on finding a vehicle on the mountain.
Distances between turbine platforms and road conditions vary, so walking cannot replace all vehicle movement. At night, dip the headlights before bends and use the horn when appropriate; slow down for oncoming traffic.
Know before you go
Closure and road safety
The ridge is closed from 23:00–04:00, and vehicles cannot enter or leave during that period. Sunrise visitors must enter after 04:00 and allow for queuing, or complete the climb and camp before 23:00; arriving after midnight is not a workable plan.
The road is steep, winding and narrow in places. Use a low gear downhill, dip headlights and use the horn at night. In heavy rain, fog or poor visibility, stop moving or descend rather than continuing to the next viewpoint.
Cold, supplies and camping
The ridge can be 8–10°C colder than the city, with strong winds. Even in summer, night temperatures may be around 15°C. Bring a shell jacket, a warm coat and a properly insulated sleeping bag; city clothing is not enough for an overnight stay.
There are no reliable shops or running water, and small stalls may be closed. Bring enough food and water. A paid toilet is listed at Turbine 12, but do not assume that other platforms have fixed toilet facilities.
Drones and weather expectations
Drones are prohibited near the turbines, and the listed 120-metre height limit does not override that restriction. Cloud sea, stars, sunrise and sunset depend on the season and weather, so no route can promise a particular photograph.
Luoding Wenta Tower or Changgangpo Aqueduct can be separate stops after descending, but Wind Farm Ridge is a remote mountain destination. It should not be treated as a casual add-on to a city sightseeing route.
