Plan at a glance
Location and how to get in
Daimei Ancient Village is in Dongyuan Town, Longhai District, Zhangzhou. It is not on Dongshan Island, and the drive between the two is about 1.5-2 hours. The commonly used entrance is the main village entrance; cross the bridge to reach the core area. It is a red-brick village where residents still live, and entry is free.
Tickets and opening hours
Entering the village is free and needs no reservation. Some private viewing platforms charge about CNY 10 per person, and boat rides, horse rides, and other experiences are charged separately at on-site prices. The village is open all day; allow 2-3 hours, and the light is softer from 8:00-10:00 in the morning or 16:00-18:30 in the afternoon.
How much time you need
A quick visit takes about 1.5-2 hours: see the panorama at the village entrance, walk the red-brick lanes, and visit Watertail Bridge before returning. If you want to take a boat, visit the ancestral halls, and take your time with photography, allow about 3 hours. There are no large commercial facilities in the village, so arrange meals and supplies in advance.

Red-brick house cluster
The village has 276 red-brick houses arranged in a neat grid, with relatively consistent orientation, size, style, and drainage. The swallowtail ridges, red-tile roofs, and stone walls are the main features. The lanes are narrow, so walk slowly and do not enter private courtyards.
Ring waterway and the old banyan
An inner river of about 3.2 km surrounds the village, creating a waterside setting, and the area near Watertail Bridge shows reflections of the bridge and river. At the village entrance, a banyan tree more than 300 years old is locally called the "life-saving tree" and is a good place to rest.
Ancestral halls and who it suits
The front and back ancestral halls keep wood, brick, and stone carvings, and the flagpole stones in front record the village's history of official honours. The village suits fans of traditional architecture, photographers, and visitors who like a quiet walk, and it also works well for families at a slow pace. For a panorama you need to climb higher or stand on the free earth mound.
Build your day
Quick route (about 1.5-2 hours)
Take in the panorama at the village entrance, walk slowly through the red-brick lanes, photograph the reflection at Watertail Bridge, rest under the old banyan, and then return. When time is tight, do not chase the boat rides.
Half-day route (about 3 hours)
See the panorama at the entrance first, then take a hand-rowed boat around the ring waterway, visit the front and back ancestral halls and the old dock ruins, and end by resting by the river. The boats are privately run, so confirm the price, route, and duration before boarding.
Plan separately from nearby stops
Daimei Ancient Village is not in the same place as Zhangzhou Old Town or Zhangzhou Museum, so do not present it as a short loop along the way. When arranging multiple stops in one day, calculate the cross-district travel time and each stop's opening hours first.
Get there
Driving
Driving is the most convenient option. Navigate to "Daimei Ancient Village" or "Daimei Ancient Village Parking Lot"; the village entrance has a free parking lot with enough spaces, though on holidays it may charge about CNY 10 per day. From Zhangzhou city centre the drive takes about 40 minutes, and from Xiamen about 1 hour.
High-speed rail and taxis
After high-speed rail to Zhangzhou Station, a taxi takes about 30-40 minutes, covers about 26 km, and costs about CNY 30-40. The exact fare follows the day's meter.
Public transport
The L6 cultural tourism bus from Zhangzhou Old Town reaches Daimei Ancient Village, with a one-way ride of about 2 hours and limited service; you can also take a tourist bus from Zhangzhou bus station to the area and then transfer. Check the schedule and fare before going.
Know before you go
Viewing platforms and drones
People may stop you at the village entrance and charge a "viewing platform" fee; you can decline directly. About 30 metres to the left there is a free earth mound with a panorama. Private rooftop platforms usually charge about CNY 10 per person, so confirm the price before deciding. Drones are not allowed in the village.
Boat rides
Hand-rowed boats are privately run, and prices may be high, so confirm the price, route, and duration before boarding. Some periods may stop for safety reasons, following the on-site situation. Do not board a boat casually from the bank.
Sun and paths
The core area has little shade and is very sunny in summer, so bring a sun hat and insect repellent. The lane surfaces are uneven; wear flat shoes or trainers and watch your step.
Spending and parking
Snack prices in the village vary, so confirm prices before ordering. Park only in the regular area shown by signs, and do not park at roadside spots where people solicit drivers.
