A specialist museum inside Duan Inkstone Culture Village
Duan Inkstone Museum is at No. 112 Duanzhou 1st Road, inside Duan Inkstone Culture Village. Use “Zhaoqing Duan Inkstone Museum” for navigation. Allow 1.5–2 hours for the museum. Add the culture village and Baishi Village workshops and shops and you can spend half a day.
The museum opens Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00–12:00 and 14:30–17:00, with last entry at 16:30. It is closed on Mondays. Entry is free. Individual visitors do not need an advance reservation, but must bring the original ID card for entry; screenshots are not accepted. Groups of more than 10 should reserve one day in advance.
The museum and the village are two different parts of the visit
The galleries explain the origin of Duan inkstone, the stone and the carving process. The culture village has workshops, shops and live carving. See the museum first, then walk through the village; this makes it easier to decide whether you want a souvenir or a serious inkstone.
You can scan a QR code for commentary in the museum. The first-floor shop has 11 Duan inkstone-themed stamps. Bring a notebook or blank booklet if you want to collect them.

1.5 hours: origins and representative pieces
Entrance Chaotian Gate reproduction area → Origins of Duan Inkstone exhibition → Purple Jade Radiance exhibition → Guinness-related pieces → museum shop. This is suitable when you have limited time and want to understand how the stone is quarried and turned into an inkstone.
The Nine-Dragon Inkstone, the large cauldron-shaped inkstone and the plum-blossom stone-eye inkstone are useful highlights. Read the notes on size and stone quality rather than moving through the galleries only by photo locations.
Two to three hours: see the craft process
Reconstructed quarry tunnel → Purple Jade Radiance exhibition → Craftsmanship Like Magic exhibition → Scholar’s Objects exhibition → Duan Inkstone Culture Village and Baishi Village. The quarry tunnel helps first-time visitors understand the working environment; the craft gallery then fills in the carving and polishing stages.
Prices and materials vary among the village shops. If you do not know much about inkstones, leave shopping until the end. See the exhibitions first, ask about the stone and intended use, then decide whether to buy.
Family visit: exhibition and hands-on activity
Start in the museum, then go to the cultural-creative workshop for a miniature inkstone or seal-carving activity, and finish by watching a craftsman work in the village. The making process is often easier for children to follow than a long sequence of display cases.
Hands-on activities are separate from free museum entry. Ask about the price and duration before joining. Around the workshops, watch for tools, stone pieces and vehicles, and do not touch unfinished work without permission.

The Nine-Dragon Inkstone is large and has a lot of information around it, so allow time to read the display. Visiting the museum before entering the village shops makes it easier to form your own judgement.
Deep route: museum, tunnel and village
Entrance → reconstructed quarry tunnel → Purple Jade Radiance exhibition → Craftsmanship Like Magic exhibition → Scholar’s Objects exhibition → Baishi Village. The tunnel, craft galleries and active workshops correspond to quarrying, carving and use. Following that order reduces backtracking.
If you shop in Baishi Village, decide on a budget and purpose first. A small inkstone, seal or cultural-creative item is easier to choose as a normal souvenir. Judging “old pit” stone requires experience, so do not pay more simply because a shop assistant recommends it.
Divide the museum and the old city into two sections
You can visit Zhaoqing Museum or Songcheng Ancient City Wall in the morning and come to the inkstone museum in the afternoon, or reverse the order. The culture village is not the same walkable neighbourhood as the old city, so leave time for the transfer.
For zongzi, rice noodles or eel rice, the old city has more concentrated food choices. Bring water and a small snack for the culture village rather than relying on a single restaurant nearby.
Get there
Parking is relatively easy
Drive to Duan Inkstone Culture Village. The museum has an underground car park and roadside parking, both listed as free. From Zhaoqing Railway Station, a taxi takes about 10–15 minutes. City bus routes 1, 3, 5A, 10 and 13 stop at Duan Inkstone Culture Village, about five minutes on foot from the museum.
After parking, locate the museum entrance first, then decide whether to visit the village. The workshops and shops are spread out. Before leaving, confirm where the car is; Baishi Village is not the same as the museum exit.
Handle entry, commentary and shopping separately
Scan your ID at entry, check which galleries are open and then decide whether to use the audio commentary. The museum closes daily from 12:00–14:30, so morning visitors should leave before noon and afternoon visitors should not arrive close to 16:30.
Museum entry is free. Workshops, cultural-creative products and inkstone purchases follow their own prices. Groups of more than 10 should reserve one day in advance rather than negotiating entry after arrival.
Know before you go
Avoid Monday and the midday closure
The museum is closed on Mondays and also closes from 12:00–14:30 each day. Last entry is 16:30. For a complete visit, use 09:00–11:00 or arrive soon after 14:30.
Flash photography is prohibited, and some temporary exhibitions may restrict photography. The galleries have glass cases and reflective lighting; follow the signs and adjust your angle rather than using flash.
Do not let “old pit” decide the purchase
The culture village and Baishi Village sell inkstones with very different prices, stone materials and workmanship. Without experience, a small cultural-creative item or miniature inkstone is the safer choice. If you want a larger piece, ask about the stone, size, carving, use and after-sales arrangements before deciding.
The museum is usually quieter from 09:00–11:00. Put the village shopping after the indoor visit, especially in summer, so you can avoid the midday heat and avoid paying in a hurry without comparing the options.
