One to two hours covers the main galleries
Zhaoqing Museum is at No. 5 Shizi Road in Duanzhou District, close to the ancient city wall and Qilou Street. Allow 1.5–2 hours for a normal visit. The museum, wall and old streets form a practical half-day history route.
The museum opens Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00–17:30, with last entry at 17:00. It is closed on Mondays. Admission is free and individual visitors usually do not need an advance reservation, but you must bring the original ID card, driving licence or another accepted document for registration. A screenshot is not accepted.
Register before you start the galleries
The first-floor service desk lends over-ear audio guides free of charge. The museum shop also has a set of Zhaoqing-themed stamps. If you want the guide or plan to collect stamps, handle this after entering before you start the exhibitions.
The museum includes general history, Duan inkstone, intangible heritage and temporary exhibitions. Temporary displays change, so do not treat one exhibition as a permanent feature. Use the day’s gallery arrangement as the final guide.

1.5 hours: focus on three important objects
Follow the first-floor history gallery, the second-floor Duan inkstone exhibition, the key objects and then the museum shop before walking to the city wall. The Eastern Jin irrigation-field model, imported glassware and the large Nine-Dragon Duan inkstone are sensible priorities for a first visit.
When time is short, use the history gallery to understand the timeline, then give the remaining time to the inkstone exhibition and any temporary display. There is no need to stop at every case.
Half a day: museum and old city wall
Zhaoqing Museum → Chaotian Gate → ancient city wall → Piyun Tower → Liqiao Tower → Songcheng Qilou Street. Chaotian Gate is about a one-minute walk from the museum, so the transfer is short and clear for first-time visitors.
If you arrive on a Monday, Piyun Tower is closed, but the wall and Qilou Street can still be visited. In the afternoon, put the indoor museum first and keep the wall and old streets flexible.
Two hours: with children
Rent an audio guide and follow the history, inkstone and intangible-heritage galleries, then go to Qilou Street for a zongzi or dessert stop. If children become tired, keep the three key objects and leave rather than circling the whole museum again.
The museum has a spiral staircase and an open atrium, but cases, models and objects are not for touching. Treat the photo and stamp stops as breaks instead of rushing children through every gallery.

Quick route: history, inkstone and the shop
First-floor general history gallery → second-floor Duan inkstone exhibition → key objects → museum shop → Songcheng Ancient City Wall. Start with the timeline from the early local cultures to the later prefectural city, then use the inkstone exhibition to understand the local craft.
The key objects include an Eastern Jin pottery irrigation-field model, Eastern Jin imported glassware and a large Nine-Dragon inkstone. Read the labels before photographing them; their dates, uses and origins are different.
Half-day route: museum before the old city
Zhaoqing Museum → Chaotian Gate → wall walkway → Piyun Tower → Liqiao Tower → Songcheng Qilou Street. The wall can be walked on Monday, but Piyun Tower is closed, so adjust the second half of the route accordingly.
If you also want to visit Seven Star Crags, the road distance is about 3 km and the taxi ride is listed at around 10 minutes. Do not plan to walk between the museum and Seven Star Crags.
How to divide time inside
Use the main gallery to build a basic local-history timeline, then slow down in the inkstone exhibition for tools, stone textures and carving. Choose the intangible-heritage, Cantonese-food or temporary exhibition according to your interest rather than trying to finish everything before the wall’s best visiting time.
The audio guide at the first-floor service desk is an over-ear device. The number of devices, temporary displays and interactive activities may change, so ask at the desk after entering rather than assuming a fixed programme.
Get there
Buses and taxis are straightforward
City buses 1, 6, 10, 18 and 20 stop at Shizi Road or Chaotian Gate, about 3–5 minutes on foot from the museum. From Zhaoqing Railway Station, a taxi takes about 10 minutes. From Zhaoqing East Railway Station, the taxi ride is about 25 minutes.
For driving, use “Zhaoqing Museum Parking Lot,” but spaces are limited. The Micang Lane temporary lot and the city government parking area are alternatives; holiday access and free parking depend on the day’s arrangement.
Walk directly to the city wall
The museum and Chaotian Gate are very close, so you do not need another taxi after leaving. The wall, Piyun Tower, Liqiao Tower and Qilou Street form a continuous walking route. With older visitors, divide it into shorter sections around the stairs.
On Monday, replace Piyun Tower with the open wall and old streets. Registration, tower entry and evening lights are separate time windows, so leave space for each rather than treating them as one opening period.

Keep the galleries quiet and avoid flash
Flash photography is prohibited, and some temporary exhibitions may prohibit photography altogether. Check the gallery signs before taking pictures, and do not touch cases, models or interactive equipment unless it is clearly provided for visitors.
The museum parking area is small, and weekend tour groups are more common in the afternoon. 09:00–11:00 is usually better for a slower visit. If you plan to continue to the wall, leave enough time before Piyun Tower’s 16:30 last entry.
