A three-storey viewpoint on the city wall
Piyun Tower stands on the western section of Songcheng 1st Road, on the old city wall in Duanzhou District. It is one of the higher points on the northwest side of the wall. Allow 1–1.5 hours for the tower and a section of the wall; add the museum, Liqiao Tower and Qilou Street and allow half a day.
Piyun Tower opens Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00–12:00 and 13:00–17:00. Last entry is 16:30 and the tower is closed on Mondays. Entry is free. Register your name and phone number at the front desk; no advance reservation is needed. The wall walkway itself is open all day.
Check the stairs and restoration notices before entering
There is no lift in Piyun Tower. The old wall also has stone steps and uneven surfaces, so visitors with older adults, young children or large luggage should treat it as a stepped historic building rather than a flat museum.
Some bends of the wall may be behind restoration barriers. If a section is closed, visit the tower and the open part of the wall without trying to complete the whole wall circuit.

One hour: the wall-and-tower highlights
Chaotian Gate → wall walkway → Piyun Tower → Wenming Gate. Climb the tower, look over the old city and leave through Wenming Gate. This is the most efficient option for visitors with limited time.
The third-floor viewing platform has windows on all four sides. You can see Xinghu and Seven Star Crags to the north, and the old city roofs and the Xijiang River to the south. The stair time between floors is part of the one-hour estimate.
Half a day: add the old-city walk
Zhaoqing Museum → Chaotian Gate → Piyun Tower → Liqiao Tower → Songcheng Qilou Street → Zhongyong Road. The museum and wall are close, so you can do the indoor visit first and leave the wall and tower for a cooler part of the afternoon.
Liqiao Tower is about a five-minute walk from Piyun Tower, and Qilou Street is a natural place to eat after leaving the wall. If you want to see the lights, continue with the exterior wall and old streets after the tower closes.
Late afternoon: separate the tower visit from the night walk
Piyun Tower stops entry at 16:30, so you cannot wait until the lights come on around 18:00 and then enter the tower. Arrive around 15:00 if you want both the interior exhibits and the evening wall lights. Visit the tower first, then wait outside for the lights.
If you only want the night view, go directly to the exterior wall and Qilou Street after 18:00. The lit exterior does not replace the tower’s interior exhibits or third-floor viewpoint.
Build your day
Tower route: from the gate to the third floor
Chaotian Gate → wall walkway → first floor of Piyun Tower → second-floor exhibits → third-floor viewpoint → return along the wall or continue to Wenming Gate. Register before entering and move upward by floor; do not stop for long in the narrow stairways.
The first floor includes a wax scene of Bao Gong on procession. The second floor has a reconstruction of the Southern Ming Yongli Emperor’s time in Zhaoqing, weapon models and a city-wall model. The third floor is for views of Xinghu, the old city and the Xijiang River. On poor-weather days, give more time to the interior.
Connect the wall to the old city
Zhaoqing Museum → Chaotian Gate → Piyun Tower → Liqiao Tower → Songcheng Qilou Street. The nearby museum provides context before the tower, and the old street gives you space for food and a slower walk afterward.
The wall bricks contain inscriptions and repair information from different periods. If a bend is crowded or closed, follow the barrier and move to another photography position around Chaotian Gate, the square below the tower or the second-floor corridor.
Do not let photography run into last entry
The third-floor windows, second-floor corridor and the square below are useful places for architectural photographs. Light is softer after 16:00, but that leaves only a short time before last entry. If you are already inside, finish the visit first and take slower photographs afterward.
Large strollers are not practical inside the tower, and the exposed wall has little shade. Plain or modern Chinese-style clothing works well with the red walls and green roof tiles, but footwear should still be chosen for stairs and stone surfaces.
Get there
Use the parking areas near the old wall
For driving, use “Micang Lane Parking Lot” or “Fucheng Square Parking Lot.” Parking is listed at about CNY 10–15. The city government parking area may be free during holidays, depending on the day’s traffic arrangements.
From Zhaoqing East Railway Station, a taxi takes about 15–20 minutes. The K02 and K03 tourist routes stop at Tianning North Road. City buses also stop at Piyun Tower or North Gate, about a five-minute walk from the tower.
Walk once you park
Piyun Tower is not a good place to drive to, visit briefly and then move the car again. Once parked, walk to Chaotian Gate, along the wall, to Liqiao Tower and through Qilou Street. On holidays this is usually faster than repeated parking changes.
If you also want to visit Yuejiang Tower or Bao Gong Temple on the same day, divide the itinerary into morning and afternoon sections. Estimate the transfers before adding the evening lights; do not assign every stop an exact number of minutes.
Know before you go
Monday closure and limited supplies
Piyun Tower is closed on Mondays, while the wall walkway may still be accessible. To see the upper platform, wax scenes and history exhibits, visit Tuesday to Sunday and enter before 16:30.
There are no shops upstairs, and the wall is exposed to the weather. Bring water, sun protection and a small snack. In summer, avoid putting all your wall photography in the middle of the day.
Equipment and safety boundaries
There is no lift, and the stairs are not suitable for large strollers. After rain, the bricks, stairs and wall walkway may be slippery. Walk slowly and follow any restoration barriers.
Some photography or temporary services around the old city may charge for prints or other extras. Ask about the price before accepting them. The exterior lights usually run around 18:00–22:00, which is separate from the tower’s daytime hours.
