The Yuan-dynasty observatory and measuring ruler
The Yuan-dynasty observatory was built under the direction of Guo Shoujing. The stone gnomon in front is about 31.19 metres long and works with the platform as an ancient device for measuring the sun's shadow. Visitors interested in Chinese astronomy should focus on the observatory, stone gnomon and Zhougong Measuring Platform.
Zhougong Measuring Platform
Zhougong Measuring Platform lies directly south of the Yuan-dynasty observatory. It is a Tang-dynasty stone gnomon built with reference to the Western Zhou system. The armillary sphere, equatorial armillary sphere and observational instruments in the courtyard are replica models, and should be distinguished from the original observatory and stone remains.
Who it suits
The observatory suits visitors interested in history, astronomy and archaeological architecture, and it is a quiet short stop within a Dengfeng itinerary. Commercial facilities are limited; the main experience is the site and the explanations of the instruments.
Build your day
30–45 minutes: the core route
Enter and visit Zhougong Measuring Platform, the Yuan-dynasty observatory and the measuring ruler in that order, then look at the replica astronomical instruments in the courtyard. The route stays close to the central axis, so you can combine photos with time to read the information panels.
A short self-drive stop
After parking, confirm the entrance and closing time, then complete the core route inside. The observatory, Shaolin Temple, Taishi Mountain and Zhongyue Temple are separate destinations. It can fit between other Dengfeng stops, but do not compress the visit just to force a mountain-route itinerary.
After closing
Official visitor activities end after 17:00, and you should not remain inside the site to stargaze after it closes. For night-sky viewing, choose a separate safe and legal location and arrange your return transport in advance.
Get there
Driving
Driving is the most direct way to reach the observatory in Gaocheng Town. Set your destination to “Guanxingtai”; parking is listed at about CNY 10. The site is small, and the main visit can be completed on foot after parking.
From Dengfeng town
From Dengfeng town, you can take a taxi or a rural bus toward Xuzhuang, Bafang or nearby destinations. Bus frequency and stopping points depend on the day, so confirm the direction of the return vehicle in advance.
Know before you go
Free entry still has opening hours
Entry is free and no reservation is required, but access is still limited to the summer hours of around 08:30–17:00. If you place the observatory late in the afternoon, enter and complete the visit before 17:00.
Original remains and replica instruments
The Yuan-dynasty observatory, stone gnomon and Zhougong Measuring Platform are the main historic remains. The armillary sphere, equatorial armillary sphere and observational instruments are replica models. Plan this as a practical daytime visit; the site does not offer an official after-hours stargazing programme.
Food and supplies
Gaocheng Town has simple foods such as cold rice noodles, fried bazhan and sesame jiaogai flatbread. Commercial facilities inside the observatory are limited, so arrange food after the short visit according to your return direction.
