Address, entrance and tickets
Songyang Academy is on Songyang South Road in Dengfeng. The usual entrance is the “Gao Shan Yang Zhi” gate arch at the South Gate. A single ticket is listed at CNY 30; the Songyang Scenic Area combination ticket is listed at CNY 80, and a CNY 100 annual pass suits visitors also planning to climb Taishi Mountain or visit several other attractions. In the busy season from April to October, hours are around 08:00–17:30, with last entry at 17:00. In the low season from November to March, hours are around 08:30–17:00, with last entry at 16:30.
How much time to allow
The central-axis route takes about one hour. Add the Tang stele, lecture hall and General Cypress trees, and allow 1.5–2 hours. Time at the academy itself is separate from the time needed to climb Taishi Mountain; a combination ticket is a ticketing option, not a shortcut through the mountain.

The General Cypress trees
The Han-dynasty General Cypress trees are easy to miss, and the two General Cypress trees are listed at about 4,500 years old. Looking closely at the trunks and crowns in relation to the academy buildings makes the value of the academy's grounds clear.
The Tang stele and lecture hall
The full name of the Tang stele is the Stele of the Sacred Virtue and Auspicious Response at Songyang Temple from the Great Tang. It weighs about 80 tonnes. The lecture hall is associated with the teaching context behind “standing in the snow at Cheng's gate.” Visitors interested in calligraphy, academy architecture or Neo-Confucian learning can spend longer at these two stops.
Architecture and nearby extensions
The academy retains a Qing-dynasty layout, with red walls, grey tiles, a semicircular pond and bridges forming a complete courtyard setting. Songyue Pagoda is a nearby stop outside the academy and is not part of the academy's ticket or internal route.
Build your day
1 hour: central-axis route
Enter through the South Gate and continue past the main gate, ceremonial gate, Xiansheng Hall, lecture hall, Daotong Shrine, library and General Cypress trees. The central axis covers the main academy buildings and old cypresses, making it easy to place between other Dengfeng attractions.
1.5–2 hours: add the stele and old cypresses
After the central axis, spend time at the Tang stele, return to the lecture hall to understand the historical context of “standing in the snow at Cheng's gate,” and then look closely at the two General Cypress trees. This timing suits a first visit before a possible Taishi Mountain hike.
Combining the academy with Taishi Mountain
If you also plan to climb Taishi Mountain that day, finish the academy as a separate visit first and then decide whether to continue to the mountain according to the on-site arrangements. The academy ticket, Taishi Mountain hiking ticket and combination ticket cover different areas; check their entrances and last-entry times separately.
Get there
Driving and parking
If driving, navigate to the Songyang Academy East Parking Lot, then walk about three minutes to the South Gate. Do not follow roadside private guides or private parking directions, especially if you plan to buy a combination ticket or continue to the mountain.
From Zhengzhou to Dengfeng
Take a direct bus from Zhengzhou Central Bus Station to Dengfeng, then use local transport or a taxi to reach Songyang Academy. Set the final destination to the academy's South Gate or East Parking Lot, rather than searching only for Taishi Mountain.
Know before you go
Busy and low-season hours
Last entry is at 17:00 in the busy season and 16:30 in the low season. If you plan to continue to Taishi Mountain, work backward from the mountain time. Reservations and ticket purchases can be handled through the Manyou Songshan mini-program or a partner platform using real-name details.
Walking at the academy
The academy grounds are compact and the main route is mostly level, so one to two hours is enough. If you combine it with Taishi Mountain on the same day, calculate the climb, descent and return separately.
Food and nearby stops
Xishi Pig's Trotters and other food options are available near Songyang Academy, while Dengfeng town has local dishes such as knife-cut noodles. Songyue Pagoda can be a stop on the way, but decide whether to continue based on closing time and your return plan.
