Address, entrance and tickets
Shaolin Temple stands below Shaoshi Mountain in Dengfeng. The common entrance is the gate arch at the Shaolin Temple Scenic Area. It is currently open as normal. The adult ticket is listed at CNY 80 and includes the main temple compound, Pagoda Forest and the martial-arts performance; minors over 1.4 metres and under 18 can receive a half-price ticket with ID. In the busy season, opening hours are around 07:00–18:00, with last entry at 16:30. Real-name tickets can be purchased through the Manyou Songshan mini-program or a partner platform.
How much time to allow
The sightseeing bus, Pagoda Forest, main temple compound and martial-arts performance make a two- to three-hour short route. Add the cable car and Book Cliff, and allow four to five hours. The Sanhuangzhai traverse takes more than six hours and requires stronger fitness and experience on mountain paths.

Main temple compound, Pagoda Forest and martial arts
The main temple compound is Shaolin Temple's core group of buildings, Pagoda Forest preserves burial pagodas from different periods, and the martial-arts performance is included in the admission ticket. First-time visitors who want to understand the temple, Buddhist architecture and Shaolin martial arts in half a day can make these three areas their main focus.
Book Cliff and the Sanhuangzhai mountain route
Book Cliff is on the climbing side of Shaoshi Mountain, and a return ticket for the Shaolin cable car is listed at CNY 100. The Sanhuangzhai traverse involves longer hiking and more complex mountain paths. Visitors who enjoy natural landforms and continuous climbs can choose a mountain route; if your knees or fitness are a concern, stay with the lower areas.
Keep it separate from Taishi Mountain
Shaolin Temple is on Shaoshi Mountain, while Taishi Mountain is climbed from the Songyang Academy side. The two are about 10 km apart and use different entrances and ticket arrangements. If you want to visit both mountains, plan them as two days or two separate outings; a Shaolin Temple ticket does not cover the Taishi Mountain route.
Build your day
2–3 hours: sightseeing bus and core areas
After entering, take the sightseeing bus to Pagoda Forest, walk to the main temple compound, and then choose a martial-arts performance based on the day's schedule. The bus is listed at about CNY 25 return or CNY 15 one way and can save roughly 2 km of level walking. Performance times depend on the day.
4–5 hours: Pagoda Forest, cable car and Book Cliff
Take the sightseeing bus to Pagoda Forest first, then walk to the Shaolin cable-car station. Ride up and hike around Book Cliff; the main section on the mountain takes about 1.5 hours, after which you return by the same route. Back at the foot of the mountain, take the sightseeing bus down, visit the main temple compound and fit in the martial-arts performance according to its schedule.
More than 6 hours: the Sanhuangzhai traverse
Hike up from the Sanhuangzhai entrance, pass Book Cliff and leave through the Shaolin Temple side. This route avoids repeating the same path, but it is long and physically demanding. Arrange the starting point, finishing point and return vehicle in advance; its fitness requirements are very different from the two- to three-hour core route.
Get there
From Zhengzhou
A regular sightseeing bus runs directly from Zhengzhou Central Bus Station to Shaolin Temple. The journey takes about two hours and the reference fare is CNY 30. You can also take a taxi or ride-hailing car from Zhengzhou, with a reference one-way cost of CNY 120–150; this is more convenient for groups of two to four.
Driving and movement inside the scenic area
If driving, navigate to the Shaolin Temple ticket centre or the official Garan Hall parking area. Parking is listed at about CNY 15 per visit. During holidays, traffic controls may direct cars to a parking area 5–7 km away, followed by a shuttle bus listed at about CNY 30 per person. Confirm the day's parking and transfer arrangements before arrival.
Know before you go
Performance, cable car and sightseeing bus
The adult admission covers the main temple compound, Pagoda Forest and the martial-arts performance. The sightseeing bus and Shaolin cable car cost extra. There are usually several martial-arts performances each day, but exact times, cable-car operation and holiday parking arrangements can change. Check the day's performance schedule and cable-car status before deciding whether to go up the mountain.
Mountain paths and equipment
Both Book Cliff and the Sanhuangzhai route involve climbing and steps. Visitors with knee problems can keep the itinerary to the temple, Pagoda Forest and performance areas. Food inside the scenic area is usually more expensive than in town, so bring drinking water and a few snacks if useful.
Parking and unsolicited guides
Use official parking and regular transport, and decline unofficial paid guides or temporary approaches offering “free parking” in exchange for eating at a particular shop. In rain or when flash-flood risk appears, mountain paths, the cable car and scenic-area access may be adjusted temporarily.
