Address, reservation and hours
Zhengzhou Shang Dynasty Capital Site Museum is at No. 366 Dongdajie in Guancheng Hui District, Zhengzhou. Enter through the South Gate. Entry is free, but a real-name reservation through the Zhengzhou Shang Dynasty Capital Site Museum WeChat account is required. From Tuesday to Sunday, the museum is open 09:00–17:00, with last entry at 16:00; it is closed on Mondays.
How much time to allow
Allow about one hour for the main museum. With the Zhengzhou Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology exhibition and the archaeological sites outside, plan two to three hours. The main subjects here are the layout of the early Shang capital, the dynamic model and the archaeology displays, so plan around those rather than a generic museum stop.

Dynamic model and the early Shang capital
The dynamic model in the second-floor entrance hall is the first major stop. It uses models, lighting and projections to explain the layout of the early Shang capital. The Duling Fang Ding, beast-mask bronze jue and gold funerary mask in the permanent galleries help explain early Shang ritual culture and urban remains; where an important vessel is a replica, follow the gallery label.
Main museum plus the archaeology institute
The museum also has an exhibition from the Zhengzhou Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, reached through an internal connecting passage. Visitors who want to understand both the city site and the work of archaeology will get more from this deeper route than from simply repeating the display cases.
Archaeological sites outside
After leaving, you can walk to the Zhengzhou Confucian Temple and Shang Dynasty Ruins Park to see the city site and surviving rammed-earth walls. These are itinerary stops rather than separate guides here; check their access and the walking route for the day.
Build your day
Quick route: South Gate to the first-floor exit
Enter through the South Gate, go first to the dynamic model in the second-floor entrance hall, then continue through Exhibition Halls One, Two and Three before exiting from Exhibition Hall Four on the first floor. This takes about one hour and fits well into a half-day old-city route.
Deeper route: the archaeology institute after the main museum
After the second floor and the main exhibition halls, follow the internal connecting passage to the Zhengzhou Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology exhibition. If the passage or exhibition is closed that day, keep the visit to the main museum and the archaeological park outside. Follow the clear South Gate–second floor–first floor route rather than looking for a different floor sequence.
Walking combination after leaving
After leaving the museum, walk to the Zhengzhou Confucian Temple and Shang Dynasty Ruins Park to combine indoor exhibitions with actual archaeological remains. If you also want a meal in the old city, finish the indoor visit first and then decide whether to complete both outdoor stops.
Get there
Metro Lines 2 or 3
Take Metro Line 2 or Line 3 to Dongdajie Station (东大街站), leave through Exit F and walk about five minutes to the South Gate. Set your navigation destination to the South Gate of Zhengzhou Shang Dynasty Capital Site Museum; Shang Dynasty Ruins Park is not the museum entrance.
Driving and parking
You can navigate to the museum parking area, but spaces are limited. If it is full, use a legitimate parking facility nearby and do not follow roadside private guides or temporary fee-collection directions.
Know before you go
Reservation and ID
Free entry still requires a real-name reservation, and you need the ID document used for the booking. On weekends and public holidays, include reservation checks, security screening and time in the entrance hall in your itinerary.
Route boundary
Use the South Gate, the second-floor entrance hall, Exhibition Halls One to Three and the fourth exhibition hall on the first floor; do not look for an upper-floor route. If you want to visit the archaeology institute exhibition, confirm that the connecting passage is open that day.
Outdoor walking and food
The rammed-earth walls, Confucian Temple and ruins park work best after the main museum visit. Shuncheng Street has halal restaurants and local snacks. Keep the old-city walking section flexible, especially if your reservation is later in the day.
