Plan at a glance
Location and overall scope
Sun Yat-sen Hometown Tourist Area is on Cuiheng Avenue in Nanlang, Zhongshan. The usual entrance is the main gate, with security screening on entry. This is a large, free heritage area that includes Sun Yat-sen's former residence, the memorial museum, revolutionary history displays, the Cuiheng residential display and park areas. The memorial museum is one of its main stops, while Zhongshan Film City nearby is a separate attraction.
Tickets, opening hours and visit planning
The tourist area is free to enter. On most days, visitors can enter after security screening without a reservation; for public holidays, a real-name reservation through the official WeChat account is recommended. Regular hours are 09:00–17:30, with last entry at 17:00. On weekends and public holidays from May to September, the area may stay open until 18:00. It is closed on Mondays except public holidays. Allow about 1.5 hours for a quick visit, or 3–4 hours for a fuller visit that also includes Film City; Film City tickets are separate.

Who it suits
The tourist area works well for first-time visitors learning about Zhongshan's modern history, visitors interested in former residences and Lingnan village architecture, and families planning a half-day educational outing. It offers more flexibility than a single museum: you can divide your time between indoor displays, the former residence courtyard, village buildings and park walks.
Former residence, village and Film City
The former residence, the sour plum tree and the Cuiheng village display are the easiest parts to combine. Blacksmith shops, a rice shop, ancestral halls and oyster-shell walls help explain the appearance of a Lingnan village. Zhongshan Film City is nearby and contains Chinese, Japanese, British and American streets, but it has its own entrance, opening hours and ticket. Treat it as a separate paid stop, not as a free extension of the tourist area.
Build your day
A 1.5-hour quick route
Enter through the main gate, visit the former residence, continue to the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Museum, and finish at the sour plum tree and courtyard. This route suits a tight schedule and leaves the afternoon available for Zhongshan Film City or Yakou Village. Before leaving, confirm the entrance and operating hours for your next stop.
A 3–4-hour route through the heritage area
Follow the Revolutionary History Exhibition Hall, the former residence and courtyard, the Cuiheng residential display area, the former residences of Lu Haodong and Yang Yin, and the Xinhai Revolution Memorial Park. Complete the indoor galleries and historic buildings earlier in the visit, then use the park and outdoor sections as the later walking part of the route. This reduces time spent outdoors in the strongest midday sun.
Combining the area with Film City
If you want to visit both places on the same day, complete the former residence and memorial museum in the morning, then enter Film City with its own day or night ticket. The two attractions are close enough to combine, but the reservation, security and ticket rules of one cannot be used to plan the other.
Get there
Reaching the main entrance
For driving, search for “Sun Yat-sen Former Residence Memorial Museum” or “Zhongshan Film City,” then choose the entrance that matches your route. By bus, travel to “Sun Yat-sen Former Residence Station (孙中山故居站).” From Nanlang Station (南朗站), a taxi takes about 10 minutes, which is practical when arriving by high-speed rail.
Parking on busy days
The car parks near the main entrance can fill quickly on weekends and public holidays. Arrive early, or use a village parking area or the outer parking area around Film City and walk a few hundred metres. Use a marked, regular parking space; do not stop on a narrow road just to get closer to the gate.
Know before you go
Security and walking distance
The main gate, memorial museum and former residence may each have a separate security queue. Free entry does not mean that every section can be visited quickly. The tourist area is spread out, so families travelling with children or older visitors should allow time for indoor breaks and outdoor walking rather than treating the 1.5-hour route as a complete visit.
Water, sun and timing
Free drinking-water dispensers are available to the left of the museum and on the second floor of the visitor centre; bring an empty bottle. The village display and courtyards have limited shade, so use sun protection and insect repellent in summer. Light is softer after around 15:00 for courtyard and village photographs, but keep the 17:00 last-entry time and the separate schedules of individual galleries in mind.
Food nearby
Nearby options include Shiqi pigeon, Yakou clay-pot rice, crispy grass carp and traditional pastries around Cuiheng Village. Restaurants keep their own hours and queues, so choose a convenient stop along your route rather than treating one restaurant as a guaranteed recommendation.
