A ferry-timed beach island
Dong'ao Island is a beach and coastal-walk destination reached by ferry to Dong'ao Island Pier. Island sights are free, but the boat timetable fixes both the length and shape of a day trip.
From Xiangzhou Port, the crossing is about 50 minutes and costs CNY 100 one way. Hengqin Pier is about 40 minutes at CNY 80 one way; a direct boat from Shenzhen Shekou usually takes around 70-90 minutes.
Allow a full day if you can
A focused route takes 5-6 hours, while an 8-hour first visit gives you time for the beach, forest boardwalk and the longer coastal loop. Stay overnight if you also want sunrise, old fortifications and the north-side stops without rushing the return boat.
On weekends and public holidays, buy ferry tickets two to three days ahead. Outbound boats generally run from roughly 08:20 to 17:15, with return sailings commonly around 16:00-17:50; fog or typhoon conditions can suspend services.

A 5-6 hour first route
From the pier, take Line 3 to the Forest Boardwalk, then continue through Honeymoon Park and the white chapel to Nanshawan Diamond Beach. Switch to Line 1 for Happy Stone, Flying Eagle Station and Sunset Station before returning to the pier.
This works well when you want the island's main beach and coastal viewpoints without trying to cover every stop. Check the return-ferry time before deciding how long to stay at the beach or at Sunset Station.
An 8-hour first visit
Spend the morning on the Forest Boardwalk, at Honeymoon Pavilion and Nanshawan. In the afternoon, use Line 1 for Wanmi Bookstore, Happy Stone, Shanhai Jing Bookstore, Flying Eagle Station and Sunset Station, then have seafood near the pier if the ferry timing allows.
The longer route is more relaxed than trying to fit the viewpoints around a short sailing window. It also leaves room for a beach break instead of treating Nanshawan as only a photo stop.
A two-day stay
Use day one for Nanshawan and Honeymoon Park, then stay near the pier or in a resort area. On day two, go to Honeymoon Pavilion for sunrise, take Line 2 to the old fortifications and former customs site, and continue to General Stone Forest.
This is the practical choice for travellers who want both beach time and the island's historic or northern-side stops. It removes the pressure to leave a scenic section early for the last boat.

Start with the forest and bay
Line 3 is the useful first move from the pier: take it to the Forest Boardwalk, Honeymoon Park and Nanshawan rather than walking the whole way. It costs CNY 10 every time you board, so keep the separate fares in mind if you get on and off several times.
Nanshawan Diamond Beach is the island's designated swimming beach. At low tide, coral and tropical fish may be visible in the water, but conditions and swimming suitability still depend on the day.
Use the coast for the afternoon
After the beach, Line 1 is the easiest way to reach the wider coastal route. The CNY 60 all-day pass allows hop-on, hop-off travel to Happy Stone, Flying Eagle Station and Sunset Station.
Honeymoon Pavilion looks over the bay and nearby islets, while Happy Stone and Flying Eagle Station are useful short coastal stops. Put Sunset Station near the end of the route, but leave with enough time to get back to the pier.
Keep the final connection in view
Line 1's last service is around 18:00, so a late sunset stop can create two separate timing problems: getting back to the pier and making the ferry. Work backwards from your booked sailing rather than assuming there will be another bus or boat.
If a hotel shuttle is available, it can simplify an overnight stay, but it does not replace checking the public ferry schedule for the next day.

Choose the departure pier
Xiangzhou Port is the usual Zhuhai departure point: CNY 100 one way and about 50 minutes. Hengqin Pier is CNY 80 one way and about 40 minutes; Shenzhen Shekou also has direct services, usually taking around 70-90 minutes.
Buy the outbound and return tickets before travelling, especially for weekends and holidays. Sailings can be affected by fog or typhoon weather, so do not plan a tight onward connection after the return boat.
Move around the island
Line 1 costs CNY 60 for an all-day hop-on, hop-off pass, Line 2 costs CNY 30, and Line 3 costs CNY 10 per ride. Use Line 3 for the Forest Boardwalk and beach section, then Line 1 for the longer coastal viewpoints.
The buses are more useful than trying to walk every road in a short visit. They also make it easier to reserve your energy for boardwalks, beach time and the scenic stops that matter most to you.
Know before you go
Make the boat ride easier
If you are prone to motion sickness, take medicine 30-40 minutes before boarding. A seat toward the stern or on the upper deck can feel more comfortable, and avoiding phone use during the crossing may help.
Bring sun protection, insect repellent and enough water for the outdoor route. The island is exposed in strong sun, and the beach and boardwalk sections offer little reason to travel heavily loaded.
Stay, eat and return without a rush
Pier-area guesthouses and resort stays are commonly in the CNY 200-400 range, and many hotels offer shuttle services. Book early on busy dates if you are staying overnight or want a room near your preferred route.
For seafood near the pier, confirm the weight and any preparation charge before ordering. Most importantly, allow enough time from Sunset Station back to the pier: the final ferry is the non-negotiable end of the day.
