Plan at a glance

Arrange the ferry before you go

Wailingding Island is reached by ferry, with Wailingding Island Pier as the arrival point. From Zhuhai Xiangzhou Port or Hengqin Pier, the crossing takes about 70-90 minutes and costs CNY 120-150 one way; from Shenzhen Shekou Prince Bay it also takes about 70-90 minutes and costs CNY 150-200.

Island sights are free, but buy return ferry tickets three to five days ahead in peak periods. Outbound ferries usually run from 8:20am to 2:30pm; final return services are around 4-5:50pm, and poor weather can suspend sailings.

Choose your visit

A four-hour route

Start at the pier lighthouse, then follow the Yudai Huanyao coastal boardwalk to Shuangzi Pavilion Beach and Rainbow Bridge before returning to the pier. The route is relatively level and works for a same-day ferry visit.

A 6-8 hour first visit

Use the morning for the pier lighthouse, Yudai Huanyao, Diaoyutai and Jinshi Park. In the afternoon, take the sightseeing bus to Ore Lake, the coastal road, Shijing Park and Beidi Temple before returning to the pier.

Two days on the island

On day one, settle into your guesthouse, walk Yudai Huanyao and watch sunset at Shuangzi Pavilion. On day two, climb Linding Peak for sunrise, then visit Beidi Temple, Shijing Park and Ore Lake.

Build your day

Boardwalk, lake and viewpoints

Yudai Huanyao is the main coastal walk, combining sea views, rocks and sunset. Ore Lake is about a 30-minute walk from the pier or can be reached by sightseeing bus; clear weather gives the best colour and photographs.

Use the sightseeing bus for higher and more distant stops. A full-island pass costs CNY 100-120 with unlimited hop-on, hop-off travel; a single ride is about CNY 60, while walking between stops takes around 10 minutes and the next bus can take about half an hour.

Get there

Ferry and island transport

Buy return tickets through Xiangzhou Port or Shekou Cruise booking channels and bring the required boarding documents. Parking at Xiangzhou Port is about CNY 50 per day; nearby residential parking is about CNY 25 per day and around a 10-minute walk from the terminal.

There are no shared bikes on the island. Decide whether to buy the sightseeing-bus pass immediately after disembarking, especially during busy periods.

Know before you go

Seasickness, sun and supplies

Open-sea crossings can be rough. Take motion-sickness medicine 30-40 minutes before boarding, choose the stern or upper deck if available, and avoid looking at your phone.

The island has strong sun and little shade, so bring high-SPF sun protection, a hat, insect repellent and a refillable bottle. Supplies arrive by boat: bottled water costs about CNY 6-8 and drinks CNY 8-10; the visitor centre has drinking water.

Accommodation and seafood

Guesthouse standards vary. If carrying luggage, choose accommodation with a lift; book around a week ahead in peak periods. For seafood, order directly from a restaurant or confirm whether preparation fees are charged by weight or by dish; local specialities include general's cap shellfish, dog-claw snails and sea urchin.

Do not fly drones or photograph naval vessels because the island has military areas.
