How to Visit
1

Treat Caohai as a wetland and birdwatching stop

Caohai is not a traditional closed scenic area. The lakeside paths, Beipo Ecological Park, and some viewpoints are better for slow walking, and Caohai itself does not charge a main entrance ticket. Winter from November to March is better for birdwatching, with December to February usually more reliable.

Tip:If you do not come in birdwatching season, do not expect to see black-necked cranes. Treat it more as a highland lakeside walk.
2

Start with Beipo Ecological Park and Jiangjiawan Pier

For a first visit, go to Beipo Ecological Park for lake and wetland views, then continue to Jiangjiawan Pier for waterbirds and lakeside photos. If you only stop for walking and photos, 1-2 hours is enough; a boat ride or waiting for birds will take longer.

Tip:Some areas inside the reserve are off-limits. If you see fences or no-entry signs, do not continue inside.
3

Use Weining County as your base

Caohai is very close to Weining County. It is easy to take a taxi from Caohai Station, central Weining, or a county hotel. If you come specially from Bijie city, leave enough time for the drive or transfers.

Tip:Caohai works better with a Weining stay, birdwatching, and local food. It is not ideal as a rushed round trip from Bijie city just for a quick look.
4

For birdwatching, go earlier and stay quiet

During migrant-bird season, try to arrive in the morning. A telephoto lens or binoculars is more useful than getting close. Do not feed birds, chase them, or walk deep into the wetland for a close photo.

Tip:Caohai is about ecology, not close interaction. Staying quiet gives you a better chance of seeing birds.
Highlights
  • An important highland wetland and freshwater lake landscape in Guizhou.
  • Winter brings black-necked cranes, gulls, and other migrant birds.
  • Beipo Ecological Park is useful for an easy walk and lake views.
  • Jiangjiawan Pier works well for waterbirds and lakeside photos.
  • Weining County is close, making food, hotels, and taxis convenient.
Insider Tips

Winter mornings and evenings are cold because Caohai sits at high altitude, so bring a jacket.

For birdwatching, avoid very bright clothing and do not approach bird groups loudly.

Rainy or windy days make the lakeside experience weaker.

If black-necked cranes are your main reason to visit, prioritize December to February.

Try Weining potatoes, Weining ham, or lamb rice noodles in town instead of relying on a full meal by the lake.
