Choose your visit
The central axis
The main axis runs through the Yimen Gate, Grand Hall, Chuantang Hall, Second Hall and Third Hall. The Grand Hall displays courtroom furnishings and plaques, while Chuantang Hall connects the administrative areas. Focus on these buildings for a quick introduction to the layout of a traditional government office.
The inner residence and side courtyards
With more time, continue to the inner residence, then explore the Tongzhi Office (同知署) and Lixing Hall (理刑厅) on the east side, and the Prison Office (司狱司) and Prison God Temple (狱神庙) on the west side. The Prison Office includes a reconstruction of prison rooms and may interest visitors curious about historic government administration and detention spaces.
Rebuilt buildings and performances
The complex is a reconstruction on its original site, with displays about its layout and the history of local government. It is not a surviving Song-dynasty government building. Interactive performances include the Kaiya Yishi (开衙仪式) opening ceremony and Xiaoshen Qi'an (笑审奇案), a court-case performance; times vary. Xihe dagu (西河大鼓), a northern Chinese narrative singing tradition, may also be performed outside; check the arrangements for the day.
Who will enjoy it
Visitors interested in historic government offices, architectural layouts and yamen culture can focus on the central axis. Families may add the reconstructed prison area and an interactive performance if one is running. The building route still works if there is no show that day.
Build your day
A one-hour central-axis visit
Enter through the main gate and visit the Yimen Gate, Grand Hall, Chuantang Hall, Second Hall and Third Hall in order, then retrace your steps along the central axis to the entrance. Focus on the layout, courtroom displays and plaques. This route suits a tight schedule.
A 1.5–2-hour full visit
Follow the central axis from the entrance through the Yimen Gate, Grand Hall, Chuantang Hall, Second Hall, Third Hall and inner residence. Then explore the Tongzhi Office and Lixing Hall on the east side, followed by the Prison Office and Prison God Temple on the west side. Return to the main axis and retrace your steps to the entrance. If you want to see the reconstructed prison rooms, include the Prison Office in the west-side section.
Planning around performances
After entering, check the day’s schedule for the opening ceremony, court-case performance and any Xihe dagu performance before deciding whether to wait for a show. Times vary, so the courtyard route can remain the backbone of your visit.
