Plan at a glance

Location and layout

Nanchuan Old Street is at 2 Yuhong Road in Yunhe District, Cangzhou. This open-air commercial street runs along the Grand Canal. The street itself is free to enter, open around the clock and does not require a reservation. Nanchuan Tower (南川楼), Langyin Tower (朗吟楼), the main canal-side street and riverside walkway are all part of the same area, while the towers and shops keep their own hours.

When to go and how long to stay

By day, the main street is best for architecture and a canal-side walk; in the evening, you can see the illuminated streetscape. Allow 1–1.5 hours for a quick walk, or 2–3 hours if you plan to eat, climb a tower if open, and spend time by the water. Lighting times vary, so do not plan around a fixed switch-on time.

Choose your visit

Nanchuan Tower and Langyin Tower

The two towers are the street’s main elevated viewpoints. You can admire them from below or, if open that day, climb one for views over the canal and the street’s central axis. Access and any admission charge can change; check the on-site information before going up.

The canal, bridges and evening views

The riverside path, Cangqu Bridge (沧曲桥) and canal-side pavilions make a pleasant evening walk. Boats, reflections and lighting depend on the conditions that night. Short light shows near Langyin Tower may take place when announced. Red walls, transparent signboards and the “Old Cangzhou” (老沧州) cartoon figures make informal photo stops when they are set up.

Who will enjoy it

This is a good choice for an evening canal walk, night photography or a stroll after dinner. The street focuses on recreated historic-style architecture and lighting; it is more about the streetscape and views from the towers than surviving historic buildings.

For a daytime visit to Grand Canal heritage displays, see China Grand Canal Intangible Cultural Heritage Exhibition Hall.

Build your day

A 1–1.5-hour South Gate walk

Enter at the South Gate and follow the main street north toward Nanchuan and Langyin Towers. First see the towers from outside, then climb one if it is open that day. Return south along the timber walkway beside the canal and finish at the South Gate.

A 2–3-hour walk from north to south

Enter through the North Gate and head south past Qingfeng Tower (清风楼). Stop for dinner, then continue toward Nanchuan Tower, Langyin Tower and the canal. If the lights are on, climb an open tower or enjoy the riverside view near Cangqu Bridge. Finish toward the South Gate; choose towers and temporary performances according to that day’s opening arrangements.

Add the canal heritage hall

If you also want to visit the China Grand Canal Intangible Cultural Heritage Exhibition Hall, plan it as a separate stop. The hall takes about 1.5–2 hours and is closed on Mondays; allow another 1–1.5 hours for the short street walk or 2–3 hours for the longer route. Add transfer time between the two and check the hall’s opening arrangements before setting out. Enter the street from the North Gate if that suits your day’s route. Allow extra time if you also want to walk around other parts of Garden Expo Park.

Get there

Bus and choosing an entrance

City buses 16, 31 and 615 serve the area. Parking is available near the South Gate. The North Gate is close to Qingfeng Tower and Garden Expo Park, so choose an entrance based on where you plan to start. There are several street entrances; leave from the end that matches your route.

Driving, parking and holiday traffic

Navigate to “Nanchuan Old Street Parking Lot No. 2.” Parking is around CNY 2 per hour; the actual fee is set by the lot. Roads can be congested on holidays, and some nearby streets are one-way. Ride-hailing pick-up and drop-off may be affected; buses or shared electric bikes can be easier to arrange.

Know before you go

Towers, shops and events

The street being open all day does not mean the towers and shops are. Check tower access and fees before climbing. Lighting, boats, light shows and drone displays may change with the date, weather or event schedule, so do not make a particular performance essential to your visit.

Food, breaks and crowds

Nearby options include Dongzhai Hotpot Chicken (东翟火锅鸡) and 0317 Hotpot Chicken (0317火锅鸡), as well as donkey-meat flatbread (驴肉火烧). A meal is roughly CNY 50–80 per person; menus and wait times vary. Hezhong fried dough sticks (和众大油条) are an option for a quick bite. Minzu Road (民族路) and Zhiqiang Road (志强路) also have halal snacks such as lamb-intestine soup (羊肠子) and donkey-meat flatbread.

If you are also visiting the canal heritage hall, Cangzhou Fang beside the hall is convenient for food and a rest; allow separate time to travel between the hall and the street. Holiday crowds can lead to queues on the main street and at popular restaurants. Wayfinding signs are limited, so note the North and South Gates and the tower locations before you start. Restrooms may also have queues at busy times.
