What you will see
Hongmei Park is a free, open city park. Allow 1–2 hours, or use it as a walking section after Tianning Temple. The park is open all day; Wenbi Pagoda and Hongmei Pavilion charge separate fees, and these paid attractions are open for roughly 09:00–17:00.
The South Gate is close to Wenbi Pagoda Square and the metro; the West Gate is next to Tianning Temple. First-time visitors can enter from the South Gate, walk west past Wenbi Pagoda, the rockery cave, Hongmei Pavilion and the lake area, and leave through the West Gate.
Choose a route by available time
With one hour, follow the main South Gate–West Gate route. With two hours, add Wensi Bridge, Tayingshan House, Jiaxianfang and the Central Lawn. Photographers can spend longer by the lake, while families with children can shorten the route.

Pagoda, gardens and lake views
Wenbi Pagoda is the park landmark, while Hongmei Pavilion gives the park its name. Jiaxianfang and Tayingshan House retain Jiangnan garden details. Yingmei Lake is suited to water and pagoda reflections; the rockery cave offers a view outward toward Wenbi Pagoda, and the opening under Wensi Bridge can also frame the water.
The park suits visitors interested in historic buildings and garden photography, as well as families looking for an easy city walk. Allow more than two hours for detailed architecture and gardens; the one-hour main route is enough for a rest, the pagodas and the lakeside.
Daytime visit and evening extension
At dusk, Yingmei Lake is a good place to photograph the reflection of Tianning Pagoda, with changing light giving the same view a different character from daytime. You can continue with a lakeside walk at night; night markets, lighting and on-site events vary by date.
Build your day
About one hour: quick route
Enter through the South Gate, go first to Wenbi Pagoda, continue through the rockery cave and Hongmei Pavilion, and leave through the West Gate toward Tianning Temple. The paid viewing hours for Wenbi Pagoda and Hongmei Pavilion are limited, so visit their interiors during the daytime route rather than near closing.
This route focuses on landmarks and photos. If you start from Tianning Temple, walk in the opposite direction from the West Gate to the South Gate.
About two hours: highlights route
From the South Gate, visit Wenbi Pagoda, the rockery cave, Wensi Bridge, Tayingshan House, Jiaxianfang and Hongmei Pavilion, then continue to the Central Lawn and leave through the West Gate. The route combines buildings, bridges, water and open lawn, making it suitable for first-time visitors who want the main sights in one visit.
If someone in your group is not suited to a long walk, cut the garden side paths between Wenbi Pagoda and Hongmei Pavilion and follow the main road to the lake before leaving through the West Gate. On busy holidays, keep photo stops brief.
Tianning Temple and the evening lakeside
Tianning Temple and Hongmei Park fit well into one half day: visit the temple in the morning, enter the park after leaving through the East Gate, walk along a north–south or east–west main route in the afternoon, and return to Yingmei Lake at dusk for the pagoda reflection. If Qingguo Alley Historic District is also on the plan, treat it as a separate walking section rather than compressing several attractions into one hour.
Get there
Metro and buses
Take Metro Line 1 or Line 2 to Culture Palace Station, or Line 2 to Hongmei Park Station; the walk from the station is about 2–5 minutes. The South Gate is closer to Wenbi Pagoda Square and the metro side, while the West Gate is next to Tianning Temple.
Buses serve Hongmei Bus Hub and Tianning Temple stops. The metro-to-South-Gate and temple-to-West-Gate combination links Hongmei Park and Tianning Temple into a short route.
Driving and movement inside the park
The park is in the old city, where surrounding roads and parking spaces become crowded on weekends and public holidays. If you must drive, consider the underground car park at Culture Palace Square or the car park at Wenbi Hotel, then walk to the park.
The park is large enough that the distance between entrances and the lake side paths can make the actual walk longer than a straight-line map estimate. Follow the park map and signs along the way.
Know before you go
Tickets and opening hours
The park is free, open all day and does not require a reservation. Wenbi Pagoda and Hongmei Pavilion each cost CNY 5, with reference opening hours of 09:00–17:00. If you arrive only at night, focus on the outdoor roads, lakeside and park scenery.
Keep children away from the water's edge. Shops and drink stalls may have queues on holidays, so carry drinking water.
Nearby sights and pacing
Tianning Temple is next to the West Gate. Dongpo Garden is about 1 km away and Qingguo Alley Historic District about 1.5 km away; the three directions can be divided into different city walking combinations. Each stop has its own visit time.
