What you will see

Allow 1–2.5 hours for Tianning Temple. A short visit covers the Hall of the Heavenly Kings, Mahavira Hall, the Arhat Hall and the exterior of Tianning Pagoda. If you want to climb the pagoda and see its Buddhist-themed displays, allow more time. The temple is at 636 Yanling Middle Road in Tianning District, Changzhou, with the East and West Gates as the usual entrances.

The temple is usually free on ordinary days, while climbing Tianning Pagoda costs extra. It works well as a historic architecture and city-view stop; leaving through the East Gate connects naturally to Hongmei Park for a half-day itinerary.

Decide whether to climb the pagoda

About one hour is enough for the temple buildings alone. Visitors interested in city views and the pagoda displays should allow 2–2.5 hours and include the climb in the main route. The pagoda is 153.79 metres high; the climb changes the pace of the visit, and Monday maintenance arrangements should be checked.

Temple buildings and historical details

The Hall of the Heavenly Kings, Mahavira Hall and the Arhat Hall are the main indoor sections. Mahavira Hall contains large Buddhist statues and a Qing-dynasty sundial, while the Arhat Hall contains 508 individually shaped Arhat statues. Visitors interested in Buddhist architecture, local history or traditional spaces can spend longer in these halls.

The main experience is the architecture, Buddhist imagery and quiet pace. Early morning is usually less crowded and better for looking closely at the halls; weekends and public holidays bring noticeably more visitors, so leave room for other people to pass and take photos.

Tianning Pagoda and nearby extensions

You can view Tianning Pagoda from outside or buy a ticket to go up. From the upper levels, you can look across Changzhou, and the pagoda contains Buddhist-themed displays. If you only want a full view of the pagoda, the shore of Yingmei Lake in Hongmei Park is a better viewpoint, with occasional reflections on the water.

Visitors who enjoy climbing can make the pagoda the final section of the temple visit. Those who do not climb can spend the extra time in Hongmei Park or Qingguo Alley Historic District.

Build your day

About one hour: temple essentials

Enter through the East or West Gate, see the Hall of the Heavenly Kings, then Mahavira Hall and the Arhat Hall, and finish with exterior photos of Tianning Pagoda. After visiting the temple buildings, decide whether to buy a pagoda ticket.

The East Gate is more convenient if Hongmei Park is next. From there, you can enter the west side of the park and continue to Wenbi Pagoda or Hongmei Pavilion. To reach Qingguo Alley Historic District, return to the city road beside the temple.

About 2–2.5 hours: temple and pagoda

Enter from the East Gate and follow the order of the Hall of the Heavenly Kings, Mahavira Hall, the Arhat Hall and Tianning Pagoda. Placing the pagoda at the end keeps the route clear after the main temple visit and leaves room to adjust for queues or opening conditions.

After the climb, leave through the East Gate and continue directly to Hongmei Park. If you only visit Wenbi Pagoda and Hongmei Pavilion, allow at least another hour; if you also want Wensi Bridge, Tayingshan House, Jiaxianfang and the Central Lawn, plan Hongmei Park as a separate two-hour visit.

Half-day city combination

To visit the temple and park on the same day, start at Tianning Temple in the morning and enter Hongmei Park through the East Gate afterward. Qingguo Alley Historic District is about 1–2 km from the park; walking or cycling there turns the temple-and-park half day into a continuous city walking day.

Get there

Entrances and arrival

The usual entrances are the East and West Gates. The East Gate is convenient for continuing to Hongmei Park; the West Gate is better for returning to the city roads after the visit.

After reaching Tianning District by public transport, enter through either gate. Walking and short-distance cycling also connect well when combining several city stops.

Driving and nearby movement

The reference parking cap at the Tianning Temple East Gate car park is about CNY 15. There are also parking spots near Taoyuan Road and the nearby recycling-collection area, with a reference rate of about CNY 4 per hour. Parking in the city is tight on weekends and public holidays.

Tianning Temple is next to Hongmei Park, so you can continue on foot after leaving through the East Gate. Qingguo Alley Historic District is about 1–2 km away and can be the next stop.

Know before you go

Tickets and opening hours

The temple is usually open from 07:00 to 17:00, with entry stopping at about 16:30. Ordinary visits are free, but a temporary fee of around CNY 20 may be charged during the first five days of the Chinese New Year because of crowd management; do not budget for a holiday visit as if the ordinary free-entry rule always applies.

Tianning Pagoda is usually open for climbing from about 08:30 to 17:00. The climbing ticket is CNY 50; students pay half price, and visitors aged 70 or above are free with proof of age. The climb is usually closed on Mondays for elevator maintenance.

Crowds, etiquette and food

The period from 07:00 to 09:00 is usually quieter. If unofficial prayer, fortune-telling or interpretation services approach you outside the temple, confirm the service and price before agreeing.

Vegetarian meals inside the temple may finish at around 15:00, and their taste and value may not suit the whole day's meal plan. Keep main meals outside the temple and use the temple mainly for sightseeing and a short rest. Occasional summer night light events may take place, but their dates are not stable enough to form a fixed plan.
