What you will see

Changzhou Museum is free. First-time visitors should allow 1.5–3 hours. With limited time, prioritize the second-floor “Dragon Rising in Central Wu” history gallery and the third-floor Children's Nature Gallery; with more time, add the first-floor special exhibitions, Red Sandalwood Furniture Gallery, Modern Art Gallery and cultural-creative rest area.

The museum is at 1288 Longcheng Avenue in Xinbei District. Regular hours are Tuesday–Sunday, 09:00–17:00, with entry stopping after 16:00; it is closed on Mondays. In July and August, weekday hours may extend to 18:00 and weekend hours to 20:00; in other months, use the regular schedule.

Choose your focus

History-focused visitors can make the second-floor history gallery their main route. Families can place the third-floor Children's Nature Gallery in the middle of the visit. Architecture and photography enthusiasts can look at Changzhou Cultural Plaza, the interior spiral staircase and the exterior of the building.

Choose your visit

Second floor: “Dragon Rising in Central Wu”

The second-floor gallery introduces Changzhou's history. Key objects include a Southern Song red-lacquered, gilt-incised lian-petal box with figures and flowers, and a Southern Dynasties brick carved with dragons and tigers. The first helps visitors understand Song-dynasty lacquerwork; the second connects with the local story behind Changzhou's nickname, “Dragon City.” Whether a particular object is on display depends on the exhibit labels and current display.

The history gallery rewards slow reading of the text and cases; allow at least 40–60 minutes. Visitors unfamiliar with Changzhou place names and Chinese dynasties can start with the gallery overview and then choose the sections that interest them.

Third floor: Children's Nature Gallery and other rooms

The Children's Nature Gallery has large animal skeletons, dinosaur fossils, wildlife specimens and interactive installations. It suits families and adults who want a change of pace. Interactive features include the “Race with a Tiger” exercise bike and a heat-sensitive butterfly wall; their operating status follows the museum's arrangements that day.

The first-floor special exhibitions, Red Sandalwood Furniture Gallery and Modern Art Gallery are useful additions when time permits. Exhibitions rotate, so the current display rather than an earlier object list should guide expectations.

Architecture and Cultural Plaza

The museum forms part of the Changzhou Cultural Plaza complex with Changzhou Grand Theater, the library and other buildings. A short walk around the plaza works before or after the museum. The interior spiral staircase, building exterior and scenes in the third-floor nature gallery can be photographed.

Build your day

About 1.5–2 hours: quick route

After entering, go to the second-floor “Dragon Rising in Central Wu” gallery for Changzhou history and key objects, then visit the third-floor Children's Nature Gallery, and finish in the first-floor cultural-creative area for a rest or stamp activity. This connects the main floors without unnecessary backtracking.

With children, start on the second floor and continue to the third. If the nature gallery is the main interest, start there instead, but check the last admission time so the final floor is not cut short by closing.

About 2.5–3 hours: highlights route

Start with the day's special exhibition on the first floor, then visit “Dragon Rising in Central Wu” on the second floor, followed by the Children's Nature Gallery, Red Sandalwood Furniture Gallery and Modern Art Gallery, and finish in the first-floor cultural-creative and café areas. This route combines history, nature and art for a first visit.

Galleries may change because of temporary installation or events. Use the floor index at the entrance as the day's route guide. If one gallery is closed, give the time to the history gallery or nature gallery and reduce backtracking.

Connecting with Cultural Plaza

If you have more than two hours, combine the museum and Changzhou Cultural Plaza in one afternoon. Visit the galleries with fixed opening hours first, then walk around the plaza and adjacent buildings. Changzhou Planning Exhibition Hall is connected to the museum, but the two venues have separate visit arrangements.

Get there

Metro and buses

Take Metro Line 1 to Civic Square Station, leave through Exit 2 and walk about 10 minutes. Buses including B12, 24 and 213 stop at “Changzhou Planning Exhibition Hall/Changzhou Museum,” useful when coming from central Changzhou or the high-speed rail stations.

Changzhou Grand Theater, the library and the planning exhibition hall are next to the museum but have separate entrances.

Driving and parking

The museum has an underground car park. The reference fee is free for the first half hour, CNY 3 for the first hour, then CNY 0.5 for every additional 15 minutes. If the museum car park is full, consider parking near Changzhou Grand Theater and walking; arrive early on weekends and public holidays.

Know before you go

Free admission and identification

Individual visitors normally do not need a reservation. Bring identification as required on site and pass security screening. Visitors using a passport or another travel document should confirm in advance which documents the venue accepts.

Free museum admission does not mean nearby venues use the same reservation rules. Changzhou Planning Exhibition Hall, the library, the art museum and Cultural Plaza can be combined in the same outing, but each venue has its own opening and entry procedure.

Seasonal hours and crowds

The regular schedule is Tuesday–Sunday, 09:00–17:00, with admission stopping at 16:00; the museum is closed on Mondays. In July and August, weekdays may extend to 18:00 with admission stopping at 17:30, and weekends may extend to 20:00 with admission stopping at 19:30. These extended hours are a summer reference only; use the regular schedule in other months.

Special exhibitions may have queues on weekends and public holidays, while weekday mornings are generally better for a complete visit. Key objects may be replaced by replicas or other displays during rotations; follow the current on-site explanation.
