Location and the shared entrance

Guanxi New Enclosure Scenic Area (关西新围景区) is in Guanxi Town, Longnan, Ganzhou, not within walking distance of Ganzhou's old town. All visitors first go to the shared visitor centre, then walk or take a sightseeing bus to the main Guanxi New Enclosure area. Travel between Guanxi New Enclosure, Xichang Enclosure, the rammed-earth maze and the Hakka Architecture Museum depends on how much walking is required and which vehicles are operating that day.

Tickets and opening hours

Adult tickets are about CNY 60, with a preferential or half-price ticket of about CNY 30. Eligible visitors aged 63 or above and children under 1.2 metres may be exempt from the main admission fee. Some platforms occasionally show a discounted ticket of about CNY 29.9; check its conditions on the booking page. Peak-season hours are generally about 08:30–17:30, and off-season hours about 08:40–17:00.

How much time to allow

The complete visit takes about 3 hours and includes two enclosures, the rammed-earth maze, the watchman's tower and the Hakka Architecture Museum. A shorter 1.5–2-hour visit can focus on Guanxi New Enclosure's central axis, circular gallery (跑马廊) and Half-Moon Pond. Driving from Ganzhou city takes about 2 hours, so return transport needs more planning than a dense old-town route.

Guanxi New Enclosure's spatial structure

Guanxi New Enclosure is known for its square rammed-earth walls, four corner watchtowers and an internal layout shaped like the Chinese character “国.” Follow the central axis to Dafu Residence (大夫第), study the circular gallery (跑马廊) and finish at the Half-Moon Pond (半月塘) by the east gate. Thick walls, courtyards, lanes and defensive passages are concentrated inside, so the building details deserve more time than a quick look at the outside wall.

Xichang Enclosure and the rammed-earth maze

Xichang Enclosure (西昌围) was the ancestral home of the family that built Guanxi New Enclosure. Its looser layout preserves lived-in courtyards and a Hakka folk-custom museum with painted ceilings. The outdoor rammed-earth maze suits families and architectural photography, while the watchman's tower gives a higher view down over the enclosures and surrounding village; access may vary with operations and weather.

Who this works for

Visitors interested in Hakka enclosures, rammed-earth buildings and village spaces can choose the full route. Photographers can use the Half-Moon Pond at the east gate, the second-floor circular gallery (跑马廊) and the high point of the maze as three different viewpoints. Families can combine the short route with the maze, while the Hakka Architecture Museum provides an indoor stop in hot weather.

Build your day

Complete route: about 3 hours

Start at the visitor centre and walk or take the sightseeing bus to Guanxi New Enclosure. Follow the central axis, Dafu Residence, the circular gallery (跑马廊) and the Half-Moon Pond at the east gate. Then visit nearby Xichang Enclosure and Xu Family Ancestral Residence (徐家祖宅), try the rammed-earth maze, climb the watchman's tower, and finish at the Hakka Architecture Museum near the entrance before returning to the visitor centre.

This order puts the largest enclosure first, followed by the ancestral home and outdoor activities, with the indoor background information near the end. Whether the sightseeing bus runs, where to wait and whether it costs extra depend on the scenic-area arrangements in effect that day; allow extra time for the actual walking conditions.

Quick route: about 1.5–2 hours

Travel directly from the visitor centre to Guanxi New Enclosure. See Dafu Residence on the central axis, follow the circular gallery (跑马廊) to study the courtyards and lanes, then leave through the east gate to photograph the enclosure's reflection in Half-Moon Pond before returning. This version skips Xichang Enclosure, the maze and the watchman's tower, leaving time for Longnan city or another stop.

Returning to the visitor centre

After leaving the main enclosure, follow the signs and walk or take the sightseeing bus available that day back to the visitor centre, then collect your car or leave the area. If you are heading to Longnan city or the high-speed rail station, arrange a ride-hailing car in advance or confirm the bus; finding a car outside the scenic area at the end of the day can be difficult.

Get there

Driving and high-speed rail connections

Driving from Ganzhou city takes about 2 hours and is the most direct option. The scenic area has a large paid car park, costing about CNY 10 per visit; check the on-site notice for the exact charge. By high-speed rail, use Longnan East Station, then take a taxi for about 30 minutes or confirm whether a tourist shuttle is running that day.

Moving between Longnan and the scenic area

Guanxi Town is far from Ganzhou's old town, so treat this as a separate half-day or full-day Longnan plan. Count the high-speed rail station, visitor centre, enclosures and return journey as separate legs before arranging the internal scenic-area route.

Know before you go

Heritage buildings and walking boundaries

The enclosures are mainly made of rammed earth and timber. Stay on open routes and do not touch, carve or climb the walls, timber structures or displays. The maze, watchman's tower and sightseeing bus are optional stops; if one is closed, crowded or slippery, continue through the open areas and do not enter an unopened side path.

Prices, vehicles and the return journey

The CNY 60 adult ticket, CNY 30 preferential or half-price ticket and platform tickets around CNY 29.9 may have different conditions. Confirm at the visitor centre whether Guanxi New Enclosure and Xichang Enclosure use the same ticket and whether the sightseeing bus is included. Vehicles back to Longnan city or the high-speed rail station may be hard to find when the site closes, so arrange a ride-hailing car in advance.

Food nearby and onward stops

Near the scenic area, consider Chuniang Hakka Cuisine (厨娘的客家菜) or Long Momo (龙嬷嬷) for tangpi (烫皮), spring rolls and rice cakes. Jiangxi food can be spicy, so state your preferred level when ordering. If you have more time, Huangdaosheng Arcade Street (黄道生骑楼老街) or Shikewei (世客围) can be later Longnan stops, with their driving time planned separately.
