Village location and access

Linzhai Ancient Village is in Linzhai Town, Heping County, Heyuan, with the village gatehouse and main entrance as the usual arrival point. The village is currently free to enter and does not require a ticket or reservation; the lanes are accessible throughout the day, but some old houses may be closed because they are unoccupied or unsafe.

Plan the main visit between 08:00 and 18:00. The core buildings and lanes take about 2–3 hours, while adding the fields, lotus ponds and a farm meal takes about 3–4 hours; the village has limited commercial services, so bring water and a small snack.

Choose your visit

Qian Guang Lou and the four-corner houses

Qian Guang Lou is one of the village’s larger four-corner houses, covering about 2,700 square metres with 324 rooms and 11 courtyards. Its lacquered wood carving, courtyard light and thick walls suit architecture lovers, photographers and family learning visits.

Yongzhen Lou and Yingchuan Old House

Yongzhen Lou retains four watchtowers, gun openings and thick outer walls, while Yingchuan Old House is known for its plaque, calligraphy and wood carving. The two buildings show different parts of the village’s history, but not every old residence is open; follow barriers and on-site access rules.

Lanes, fields and a rural setting

Fields, lotus ponds, stone lanes and open countryside surround the village, with noticeable seasonal changes in early summer and autumn. It suits visitors who want a quiet village, rural photography and an easy walk, but not travellers expecting a developed commercial street or many restaurants.

Build your day

A 2–3 hour four-corner-house visit

Enter through the village gatehouse and visit Qian Guang Lou, Yingchuan Old House and Yongzhen Lou before returning through the old lanes and well. The core walk takes about 2–3 hours; watch the steps and uneven stone surfaces, and do not climb barriers for photographs.

A half-day village and fields visit

Spend about two hours in the four-corner-house area, then walk to the fields or lotus ponds for photographs before eating at a private farmhouse meal in the village or in town. Allow about 3–4 hours; the open areas have little shade, so bring sun protection and drinking water even in the cooler months.

Two days in Heping County

Self-driving visitors can visit Linzhai on day one and stay in Heping County, then visit Dongshan Ridge and the Yangming Museum on day two. The ridge climb and stairway are a separate outdoor activity, so choose them according to fitness and weather rather than continuing uphill late in the day.

Get there

Driving and parking

Driving from Guangzhou or Shenzhen to Linzhai takes about 2.5–3 hours. There are several free parking areas at and near the village, usually with enough spaces; self-driving also makes it easier to connect Linzhai with other Heping sites.

High-speed rail and local transport

From Heping North Railway Station, a taxi to Linzhai takes about 40–50 minutes; from Heyuan East Railway Station, the transfer takes about 1.5 hours. You can also travel to Heping County and take a local bus or taxi, but rural return vehicles are limited, so arrange both directions in advance.

Know before you go

Free access does not mean every house is open

The village is currently free to visit, but some old residences may be closed or unsafe. Do not cross barriers, enter dangerous buildings or assume that every four-corner house has an open interior; view closed structures from outside.

There are few regular restaurants or convenience shops in the village, so carry water and snacks. Choose a village or town restaurant according to its actual opening status rather than treating every recommended place as a permanent stop.

Surfaces, weather and the return journey

The lanes include stone paving, steps and uneven ground, so comfortable flat shoes are safer than sandals. The fields are open and sunny, and the colour of the autumn rice depends on season and weather; each visit will not look exactly the same.

After arriving by train, the return journey may be harder to arrange than the outward trip. Without a car, confirm the return vehicle before entering the village instead of waiting until the walk is over.
