Location and entry

Heyuan Museum is on Binjiang Avenue beside Guifeng Pagoda and the Dongjiang waterfront in Yuancheng District. The usual entrance is the first-floor Visitor Centre. Admission is free, but you normally need to make a real-name reservation through the Heyuan Museum WeChat account or scan your ID at the entrance to collect a ticket.

The usual hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00–17:30, with last entry at 17:00. The museum closes on Mondays, except when holiday arrangements differ. Allow 1.5–2 hours for a first visit; if you also want Guifeng Pagoda and Heyuan Dinosaur Museum, allow time for walking and short taxi rides between the sites.

Heyuan’s local history

The first-floor history exhibition covers early settlement, changes in the city and historical threads from the Lingnan region. It is a useful introduction for first-time visitors to Heyuan, and the indoor setting works well in hot or rainy weather.

Hakka customs and everyday life

The second-floor Hakka folk exhibition includes models of walled houses, recreated plaques and window decorations, and scenes showing traditional weddings. It suits families on an educational visit, history travellers and anyone looking for a quiet indoor stop in the city.

Objects, architecture and photography

The museum includes a Ming dynasty sancai ceramic jar, material on Zhao Tuo and Lingnan civilisation, and a central courtyard with changing light. The upper-floor windows can also frame Guifeng Pagoda; some exhibits are replicas, so focus on the exhibition design and explanations rather than assuming every displayed object is an original.

Build your day

A 1.5–2 hour museum visit

Start with the first-floor history exhibition and continue to the second-floor Hakka folk exhibition. You can collect a commemorative stamp at the front desk before leaving, and use the museum’s on-site QR audio guide if one is available.

Free guided tours may be offered on Saturdays or at particular times, but they are not a daily service. If no guide is available, continue at your own pace rather than changing the rest of the day to wait for one.

The museum, Guifeng Pagoda and Heyuan Dinosaur Museum

Heyuan Museum, Guifeng Pagoda and Heyuan Dinosaur Museum can form a city-centre heritage half-day. Allow about two hours for Heyuan Museum, 30–60 minutes for Guifeng Pagoda and its park, and another 1.5 hours for Heyuan Dinosaur Museum; Heyuan Museum and Heyuan Dinosaur Museum are next to each other but have completely separate tickets and exhibitions.

A slower city day

Visit Heyuan Museum in the morning, walk in Ehu Park in the afternoon and go to Yingke Bridge for riverside views towards evening. Taiping Ancient Street is an option for dinner and a night walk, but fountains, performances and other evening activities depend on the day and should not be treated as fixed programmes.

Get there

City transport

A taxi from Heyuan East Railway Station to Heyuan Museum takes about 20–30 minutes. The city sights are relatively close together; short taxi or bus rides usually cost about CNY 5–10, and shared e-bikes are also practical between Heyuan Museum, Guifeng Park and Taiping Ancient Street.

Driving and parking

There is free parking outside Heyuan Museum, and Heyuan Dinosaur Museum also has free parking nearby. Spaces may be tight when Heyuan Museum and Heyuan Dinosaur Museum are busy on weekends, so follow the local parking instructions and walk between the adjacent sites if needed.

Know before you go

Reservation, ID and closure days

Free admission does not mean you can always walk straight in. Make the real-name reservation before travelling or prepare your ID for the on-site scan; Heyuan Museum closes on Mondays and stops entry at 17:00, so do not leave Heyuan Museum and Heyuan Dinosaur Museum until the last hour of the day.

Expectations and comfort

The museum includes replicas and reconstructed scenes, with the main value in its overall introduction to local history and Hakka culture. The central courtyard and upper-floor windows usually have better light from 09:00–11:00 or 15:00–17:00; the riverside outside can be sunny and hot, so carry water and sun protection.

Restaurants are concentrated around Wanlong City and the riverside food streets. After the museum, you can continue to Taiping Ancient Street or find Hakka food in the city; ask about price and portion size before ordering.
