Area and main viewpoints
Xinfengjiang Dam is on Xinjiang Road in Heyuan’s Yuancheng District and is visited as a reservoir and engineering landscape. Common locations include the main Xinfengjiang Dam Tourism Area entrance, riverside viewpoints near Nianhui Fishing Village and the entrance to Bijia Mountain Park; these are different parking points, so enter the specific destination in navigation.
The site is free and normally does not require a ticket or reservation. The dam and riverside are best visited in daylight; the dam-top area has been affected by upgrading works, so reaching the top should not be promised.
Visit length
Allow 1–2 hours for the dam and nearby views. Adding Bijia Mountain and the Xinfengjiang Greenway extends the visit to about 3–4 hours, but this becomes a reservoir-and-outdoor-walk combination rather than a simple dam stop.

The dam and engineering landscape
The main sights are the dam structure, the reservoir and the riverside terrain, making this a good short stop for visitors interested in water engineering, mountain scenery or an easy excursion from the city. Viewpoints, the area beneath the bridge and the inscription at the dam offer different angles, but access may change with maintenance and on-site management.
Reservoir views from Bijia Mountain
Higher ground around Bijia Mountain gives a different view of the southern side of the reservoir and its wooded hills. The climb adds time and effort and suits hikers; visitors who only want to see the dam do not need to extend the visit for the sake of climbing.
Conditional flood-release views
Flood releases depend on water levels and engineering operations and are not a daily scheduled attraction. If a release occurs and an appropriate viewpoint is open, the water, spray and sound become an extra sight; without a release, the dam and reservoir views still make a complete visit.
Build your day
A 1–2 hour dam visit
Start at the Xinfengjiang Dam Tourism Area or an authorised viewpoint near Nianhui Fishing Village, then use the open viewing areas to see the dam, the space beneath the bridge or the dam inscription. If there is no release that day, focus on the structure, lake and riverside surroundings before returning.
Do not cross barriers, enter the floodway or walk towards an unopened riverbank to get closer to the water. This is an operating dam, and the viewing boundary can change with construction and site management.
A 3–4 hour dam and Bijia Mountain visit
After seeing the dam, follow the permitted riverside road to the Bijia Mountain Park entrance, climb if conditions allow, and return along the riverside greenway. The climbing section should be completed in daylight, with enough time left to return to the parking area.
If traffic is heavy or part of the riverside path is restricted, do not force the full loop. The dam can be visited on its own, and there is no need to add unfamiliar riverbank paths simply to increase the walking distance.
Get there
Driving and parking
Driving to “Xinfengjiang Dam Tourism Area” is the most direct option, and there are several parking points around the dam. The final few kilometres may become congested during a release or on public holidays; if traffic is diverted, park outside the restricted area as directed and do not stop near barriers or in the road.
High-speed rail, taxis and buses
From Heyuan East Railway Station, a taxi to the dam takes about 30–40 minutes. Buses from Heyuan city reach the surrounding area but are infrequent, and taxis may be difficult to call from the dam; driving or arranging a return vehicle in advance is more reliable.
Know before you go
Water and dam safety
During a release, the current is fast. Stay away from the floodway, do not climb barriers and do not enter the water. The lower reservoir water is about 14–15°C, and some riverside locations have no proper changing rooms or toilets; treat the cold water as a safety boundary, not as a swimming area.
Construction and maintenance may affect access to the dam top, the area beneath the bridge or parts of the riverside. Check the on-site boundary after arrival before deciding whether to continue walking.
Timing, supplies and nearby stops
The dam is best viewed during the day. Use sun protection in clear weather and take care on wet stones, steps and riverside surfaces after rain; facilities are limited, so bring water and comfortable shoes if you are adding Bijia Mountain.
Nearby options include Bijia Mountain Park, Wanlv Lake and the East River Gallery. Restaurants around Nianhui Fishing Village and the surrounding area serve local fish and Hakka dishes, but confirm opening and parking conditions when you arrive.
