Area and entrances

Wanlv Lake Scenic Area is a broad name for the lake district, and it does not have just one practical entrance. The Wanlv Lake Visitor Centre is used for the main boat-and-island experience; Jinghuayuan is a separately ticketed walking area within the lake district; Wanlv Valley and other lakeside locations are better suited to self-drive visits, camping or water activities. These locations should not be treated as one admission product.

Driving from Guangzhou or Shenzhen takes about 2–2.5 hours, usually on good roads. From Heyuan city, buses 107 and 109 serve the lake area; from Heyuan East Railway Station, a taxi to Jinghuayuan takes about 30 minutes.

Tickets and visit length

Main-area boat packages start at about CNY 198 and usually include the boat and an island visit, but you should confirm the departure schedule before travelling. Common summer boat departures run from about 08:30 to 15:00, usually on the hour; the area generally opens from 08:30 to 17:30.

Allow half a day to a full day if the lake cruise is your main reason for visiting. If you mainly want lake views, walking and photography, choose the separately ticketed Jinghuayuan and allow 2–4 hours; do not buy the main boat package just to visit Jinghuayuan.

Choose your visit

Lake, islands and the boat experience

The main Wanlv Lake area is built around viewing the reservoir from a boat and spending time on an island. It suits first-time visitors who want to understand the scale of the lake with relatively little walking; the exact islands and time on shore depend on the day’s route.

High lake views and lakeside stops

Jinghuayuan offers a separate walking-and-viewpoint experience. Duyun Pavilion, Xianyuan Bridge and the lakeside beach give different views of the lake and suit photography, nature scenery and relaxed lakeside stops; the steps and hillside paths mean this is more than a quick roadside photo stop.

Who it suits

Wanlv Lake works well for nature lovers, families and visitors interested in lakeside outdoor activities. Wanlv Valley and other shore locations may offer camping, paddleboarding or similar activities, but these must be confirmed for the day and are not included in the main boat ticket.

Build your day

A half-day or full-day cruise

Start at the Wanlv Lake Visitor Centre and confirm the day’s boat departure before entering the waiting area. The cruise then focuses on lake views and the island stop; if you also want to visit Jinghuayuan, keep it as a separate part of the day rather than trying to fit two different entrances around the same boat departure.

Thunderstorms may stop the boats. If the service is suspended or the schedule changes, you can switch to Jinghuayuan or another open lakeside location, but you will still need to reconsider transport and the return journey.

A half-day at Jinghuayuan

If you are visiting only Jinghuayuan, enter through the main gate and take the sightseeing vehicle to the Nu'er Guo area before walking to Xianyuan Bridge and the lakeside beach. This takes about 2–3 hours and suits families or visitors on a tight schedule; the vehicle covers only some of the lakeside roads and does not replace the uphill walk.

For the higher viewpoint, walk from Ningcui Valley up to Duyun Pavilion, then continue past Hongyan Cave and Nu'er Guo before returning by sightseeing vehicle. There are many steps and the full visit takes about 3.5–4 hours, so this option suits visitors comfortable with continuous uphill walking.

A two-day lake-area trip

On day one, you can take a self-drive route along the western side of Wanlv Lake or visit lakeside locations, choosing camping, a permitted water activity or a quiet lakeside walk according to the day’s conditions. On day two, visit Jinghuayuan for its walking paths and high viewpoints; Heyuan city has more restaurants, while lakeside accommodation offers views but fewer evening taxis.

Get there

Driving and parking

Self-driving is the easiest way to handle the lake district, but enter the name of the specific entrance in your navigation rather than searching only for “Wanlv Lake” and deciding after arrival. Jinghuayuan parking costs about CNY 10 per day; Wanlv Valley and some lakeside activity points usually have parking, although fees and access vary.

Traffic and diversions are possible around the entrances after 16:00 on public holidays. If you plan to use more than one entrance, confirm the parking area and return direction before deciding whether to continue to another location.

High-speed rail, buses and taxis

From Heyuan East Railway Station, a taxi to Jinghuayuan takes about 30 minutes. Buses 107 and 109 reach the lake area from Heyuan city, but if you are catching a boat you must allow extra time from the bus stop to the Visitor Centre.

The lake district is spread out, and taxis may be difficult to find in the evening. Without a car, arrange the return vehicle in advance, especially if you are visiting Wanlv Valley or a more remote lakeside location.

Know before you go

Ticket boundaries and timing

An on-site Jinghuayuan ticket costs about CNY 40, while an online ticket bought at least one hour in advance costs about CNY 35. The main-area boat ticket is separate and depends on the boat schedule; Jinghuayuan and the main boat experience are not the same admission product.

The Jinghuayuan sightseeing vehicle costs about CNY 10 one way. It covers parts of the lakeside road, while the uphill paths have to be walked; the lake is windy and sunny, and boats may stop in heavy rain or thunderstorms.

Supplies, photography and nearby stops

Drink and snack choices at entrances and along the shore are limited, so bring water and a small amount of food. The lake district is good for water, island and woodland views, but lake clarity, paddleboarding and sunset conditions are weather- and operation-dependent rather than guaranteed.

Nearby options include Heyuan Dinosaur Museum, Taiping Ancient Street and restaurants in Heyuan city. Steamed Wanlv Lake fish, Hakka stuffed tofu, five-finger peach chicken and stir-fried river snails are common local choices; confirm opening times and queues before committing to a specific restaurant.
