Plan at a glance
Street and opening hours
Taiping Ancient Street is in the old city centre of Yuancheng District, with east and west entrances. The street itself is free and open all day, while shops usually operate around 10:00–22:00; each shop keeps its own hours, so the all-day access of the street is not a unified shop schedule.
The core walk takes about 1–2 hours. Arriving towards evening lets you see both the arcade buildings and the lanterns after they are lit, and the street works well as one part of a city half-day rather than requiring a full day on its own.

Nanyang arcades and old-city buildings
Taiping Ancient Street preserves rows of arcades, stone paving and a number of historic buildings. It suits architecture lovers, city photographers and travellers who enjoy slow walks; the main experience is the scale of the street, the arcade details and everyday old-city life rather than entry into one particular building.
Red lanterns and the evening streetscape
After dark, the red lanterns, arcade shadows and stone paving create a different view from daytime. Photographers can arrive in the late afternoon, while families and visitors who enjoy an evening walk can move through the street at an easy pace.
Hakka snacks and an active neighbourhood
The street has local foods such as radish cakes, glutinous rice cakes, pork noodle soup, jiuchongpi and Hakka lei tea. It is still a neighbourhood used by residents, so shops, stalls and prices change over time; check the price and portion before ordering.
Build your day
A 1–2 hour old-street walk
Enter from the east or west gate, see the entrance arch and arcade corridor, then continue along the main street and the red-lantern section before choosing a snack stop and leaving from the other side. The first section may have more clothing and shoe shops than food, so walk further before deciding where to eat.
Taiping Ancient Street and city heritage sites
Taiping Ancient Street, Heyuan Dinosaur Museum and Guifeng Pagoda can form a city-centre heritage visit of about four hours. Visit the indoor museum first, go to Guifeng Pagoda in the afternoon, then return to Taiping Ancient Street for the evening arcades and food; confirm separately whether the pagoda is open for climbing.
Night walking and riverside activities
Photograph the buildings and lanterns in the evening, then walk or take a taxi to Heyuan Night Market, the riverside road or the area around the Asian No. 1 High Fountain. Fountain and other evening programmes may change; the street itself is easy to leave, so you do not need to wait there for a particular show.
Get there
City transport
A taxi from Heyuan East Railway Station to Taiping Ancient Street takes about 20–30 minutes. Take a city bus to Xiangfeng Plaza and walk about three minutes, or use a shared e-bike from Heyuan Museum or Guifeng Park.
Driving and parking
There is surface parking near the east entrance and underground parking nearby, but spaces are limited and weekends can be busy. Xiangfeng Shopping Centre is a possible alternative; park there and walk rather than trying to drive into the main pedestrian area.
Know before you go
Best time to visit
The street has limited shade and is very sunny around midday, so after 16:00 is usually more comfortable for walking and photography. If you want the night view, leave time for choosing food, queues and parking; shops do not all stay open simply because the street itself is open all day.
Ordering food and using the street
Most snacks are inexpensive, but portions and prices vary by stall. Check the menu or ask the price before ordering, and do not treat one shop’s reputation as a judgement on the whole street; a basic price and payment check is enough.
Nearby options include Guifeng Pagoda, Heyuan Dinosaur Museum and the riverside paths. Parking and dinner are both busier in the old city, so finish the evening early enough if you still need to catch a train or drive to an out-of-town attraction.
