Plan at a glance
A large historic town with performances
Chikan Overseas Chinese Ancient Town is in Chikan Town, Kaiping. It is a large visitor area centred on arcade-lined streets, overseas Chinese architecture and immersive performances. Adult admission is CNY 150; concession admission is CNY 75. Children under 1.2 metres and travellers aged 70 or above enter free.
Opening hours are 09:00–22:00, with last entry at 21:30. Allow at least a full day. A two-day, one-night stay works better if you want to watch several indoor performances, enjoy the evening programme and photograph the streets early in the morning.

One day or an overnight stay
A day trip works for travellers who want to see the arcade streets, climb for a wider view and watch one or two performances. Reserve indoor performances after entering, then visit Rong’an Lou, Dixi Road, the libraries and the Tan River waterfront.
A one-night stay gives the visit a slower rhythm: explore the streets and indoor theatres on the first afternoon, then keep the evening for the fire show and night views. Photograph the quieter arcades the next morning, then watch another performance or continue to Zili Village.

Reserve first, then explore
Enter through the North Gate, which is convenient for the visitor centre and on-site accommodation. Your first task should be reserving the indoor performances you want to see, as popular slots can fill quickly.
Then climb Rong’an Lou for a view over the town, walk along Dixi Road, and visit buildings such as the Situ Library. At sunset, head to the Tan River waterfront or nearby streets for the changing light, then watch the fire show in the evening.
Get there
North Gate arrivals and moving around town
Drive to “Chikan Ancient Town North Gate Car Park”. The North Gate is convenient for the visitor centre and accommodation check-in. Small-car parking is CNY 20 per day. From Kaiping South Railway Station, a taxi to the North Gate normally takes around 20 minutes. A direct scenic-area bus is another option.
The town is large, and walking is the best way to see its arcade details. Trams, rowboats and shared four-seat electric vehicles are available inside. Leave enough time for walking and queues between performances.
Know before you go
Reservations, footwear and evening planning
Reserve indoor performances as soon as you enter. Each visitor can reserve up to two indoor performances per day, and the weekend fire show may require a separate reservation. For popular sessions, arrive 20–30 minutes early. Some water-based or interactive performances can splash nearby seats.
There are many stone-paved streets, so flat shoes are useful. Mosquitoes can be common near the river and arcades. The iron-flower evening show is commonly staged from May to October; at other times, plan around the programme available that day.
