Kaiping Diaolou is in Kaiping, Jiangmen, Guangdong. The watchtowers and villages are spread across the countryside around Tangkou, Xiangang and Chikan. Common stops include Zili Village, Liyuan, Majianglong, Jinjiangli and Chikan Overseas Chinese Ancient Town.
How much time to allow
The sites are spread out, with drives of roughly 10-15 minutes between many stops. A half-day is enough for a free, photo-focused route; allow 8-9 hours for a first full day. Stay overnight and give it two days if you want to combine Chikan, Tangkou and more villages.
Tickets and opening hours
Reference prices are CNY 78 each for Zili Village and Liyuan; a CNY 180 pass covering Zili Village, Liyuan, Majianglong and Jinjiangli; and CNY 50 for Jinjiangli, with a further CNY 20 to climb Ruishilou. Major sites generally open around 09:00-17:50. Prices, hours and last-entry times can change, so check again before you travel.

Half a day: free villages and photo stops
Zuzhai Village → Pioneer Grain Warehouse Bookstore → the rice fields outside Zili Village. Allow 3-4 hours for this free route if time is limited and you mainly want countryside and watchtower photographs.
One day: the first-visit route
Zili Village in the morning → Liyuan → lunch in Tangkou → Majianglong → Jinjiangli. This first-visit route takes around 8-9 hours. If you plan to enter several paid sites, compare the four-site pass with individual tickets.
Two days: a slower Chikan and Tangkou visit
Spend the first day at Chikan Overseas Chinese Ancient Town, arranging any local performances and an overnight stay nearby. On day two, explore Tangkou, Zuzhai Village, Cangdong Village, Zhongjianlou and Liandenglou for a slower village-focused experience.
Build your day
Zili Village, Liyuan and Majianglong
The one-day route gives the morning to Zili Village before continuing to Liyuan. Mingshilou in Zili Village is associated with the filming location for Huang Silang’s home in Let the Bullets Fly. Liyuan is a private overseas-Chinese garden, with pavilions, bridges, water and richly mixed Chinese-Western architectural details.
Jinjiangli and nearby villages
Ruishilou in Jinjiangli is one of the area’s key watchtowers. If you prefer a less rushed day, leave Jinjiangli for another visit. Zuzhai, Cangdong, Licun, Zhongjianlou and Liandenglou can be added as free village stops.
Time in Tangkou
Plan lunch in Tangkou and include Pioneer Grain Warehouse Bookstore in either the half-day or two-day route. Its five white domed grain warehouses have been adapted into a bookstore, making it a worthwhile stop for architecture, books and light-filled photographs.
Get there
Driving gives you the most flexibility
Driving is the most flexible option. The journey from the Pearl River Delta takes around 1.5-2 hours, and a car makes it easier to link the scattered sites. Country roads can be narrow and winding, so drive slowly.
Arriving by high-speed rail
Take the high-speed train to Kaiping South Railway Station, then continue by taxi; allow around 20 minutes to the scenic area. Public transport can involve taking bus 602 to Jinqiaocheng and changing to bus 617, so allow extra time for transfers.
Moving between sites
Free inter-site shuttle buses may be available, but services can be infrequent. If you plan to rely on them, confirm that day’s timetable at the visitor centre and avoid overly tight connections.
Know before you go
Best time for photographs
Aim for 07:30-09:00 or 16:00-17:00, when the light is softer. Rice fields are fresh green in May and June, while November brings gentler autumn colour.
Food, water and walking
Food choices inside the scenic areas can be limited, so bring water and a few snacks. The villages are spread out, and comfortable shoes are important. A guide at Zili Village can add useful context on the buildings and overseas-Chinese stories.
Booking, parking and safety
Book online in advance. Performances in Chikan Overseas Chinese Ancient Town need to be arranged at its visitor centre. Parking availability and fees may change, so confirm them on arrival. Follow all on-site notices around leaning or older buildings, and do not enter areas that are not open to visitors.
