Plan at a glance

A compact overseas Chinese arcade complex

Mei Family Compound is in Duanfen Town, Taishan. It is an overseas Chinese architectural complex formed by 108 Chinese-Western arcade buildings around a central square, and it has also been used as a filming location. Entry is free and no booking is required.

The most practical visiting window is 09:00–17:00. Allow 1.5–3 hours. Most buildings are concentrated around the square, though some older areas require care.

Choose your visit

With limited time, enter through the main gate, see the arcade panorama from the central square, visit the main filming building and walk the covered arcades. Allow 1–1.5 hours.

For a first visit, allow 2–3 hours. Begin at the central square, follow the arcade shops to notice architectural details, then see the film-related streetscape, local folk displays and nearby lanes.

Build your day

Square, arcades and surrounding lanes

Start at the main gate and central square to understand the layout of the compound. Then walk through the covered arcades, looking for filming locations and the Chinese-Western details of individual buildings.

Afterwards, visit any open main buildings or exhibition spaces, then continue to lanes around the square. Save the square, arcade corners and nearby rice fields for morning or late-afternoon photography.

Get there

Best reached by road

Driving is the easiest option; navigate to Mei Family Compound or Tingjiangxu Overseas Chinese Architectural Complex. From the Duanfen exit of the Guangtai Expressway, the compound is around 15 minutes away. A taxi from Taishan Railway Station takes around 30 minutes.

Buses run from Taishan Coach Station towards Duanfen, but services are limited. For groups or travellers with limited time, a taxi, hired car or self-drive route is more convenient.

Know before you go

Respectful, safe exploration

The compound is free to enter, but some older buildings are in poorer condition. Do not climb or enter areas that are not open to visitors. Arcade corridors include steps, so watch your footing.

Mosquitoes can be common around older buildings and vegetation. Weekdays are quieter; on public holidays, arrive in the morning. Photograph respectfully around residents and working businesses.
