A historic Confucian temple in the city
Jilin City Confucius Temple Museum is at 2 Nanchang Road in Changyi District. It is dedicated to Confucius and housed in a historic temple complex. Jilin Confucius Temple was designated a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level in 2006. It works well as a city cultural stop without a separate trip to the suburbs.
Follow the central axis
The temple was first built in 1736, the first year of the Qianlong reign, at a site outside Donglaimen. It was moved and rebuilt at its current location in the late Qing dynasty. Its layout follows a north–south central axis, with Lingxing Gate, Dacheng Gate, Dacheng Hall and Chongsheng Hall in sequence. Dacheng Hall is the courtyard's centerpiece, with a double-eaved hip-and-gable roof and yellow glazed tiles.
The halls, gates, covered walkways and courtyards are all part of the visit. The buildings have undergone conservation and repairs, and some doors or indoor exhibits may be temporarily changed for maintenance. Follow the open-route signs rather than assuming every building shown on a map is open as an exhibition hall.

Choose your visit
For architecture and Confucian culture
On a first visit, focus on Dacheng Hall and the courtyards along the central axis. Read the on-site interpretation to learn about Confucian rituals and the temple's history. If you want a free guided tour, confirm the day's schedule and reservation rules with the museum in advance.
Family visit and a city culture walk
The courtyard complex is compact; allow about 1–1.5 hours. With children, look at the Confucian traditions, architectural details and local history without rushing from one photo spot to the next. During the 2025 National Day holiday, the temple held a costume parade and “Six Arts” activities. These are announced for specific holidays, not offered every day.
If you want to learn more about modern Jilin City history, add the former Jilin Machinery Bureau site as a separate stop. The public transport group has previously run a cultural route linking the temple and the former machinery bureau. Check the day's service and walking connections; the two venues are not a single on-site visit.
For a separate walk along Jilin City's riverfront, see Songhua Riverfront (Jilin City).
Build your day
One-hour route along the temple axis
Enter the complex and follow Lingxing Gate, Dacheng Gate and Dacheng Hall. Continue to Chongsheng Hall and the side courtyards according to the day's access notices. Allow about an hour for the main route. Add time for a guided tour, exhibit panels or an event.
Extend it into a half-day museum route
If you plan to join a free guided tour or temple event, schedule your arrival around it, then decide whether to continue to the former Jilin Machinery Bureau or another venue. Bus 334 has previously linked the Confucius Temple Museum and the former Jilin Machinery Bureau. If you plan to take it, check on the day whether it is operating and its actual departures.
Get there
By city bus and on foot
The museum is near Jiangcheng Square, with city buses stopping nearby and a walk from the stop. A 2024 notice from Jilin Public Transport Group listed bus 334 as serving the Confucius Temple Museum. Routes may change; use the “吉林行” app or call the transit hotline at 0432-62798110 to confirm service that day.
By taxi or car
Navigate to “吉林市文庙博物馆” or “昌邑区南昌路2号.” Before driving, confirm whether on-site parking is open and what it costs. Allow extra parking time on holidays, or use a nearby public parking lot or taxi.
Know before you go
Free admission and opening hours
Admission to the museum is free. Its hours have changed over time: travel platforms currently list evening opening, while older museum information lists a shorter daytime schedule. If you plan to visit in the afternoon or evening, confirm that day's closing time and last entry with the museum. Holiday extensions and free guided tours follow their current notices.
Protect the historic buildings and check event access
Jilin Confucius Temple is a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level. Follow the marked route and preservation notices; do not touch painted surfaces, architectural features or exhibits, or cross barriers. Guided tours, ceremonies and Six Arts activities depend on current notices. Repairs or event setup may change visitor routes inside the halls.
