Plan at a glance

The ridge, park and Xuandi Temple

Xuantianling is in Chuanying District, Jilin City. The visit area includes mountain paths, a Taoist cultural park and Xuandi Temple. Paotaishan (炮台山), whose main peak is Baerhu Ridge, is part of this mountain area and can be included in the same visit as Xuandi Temple.

Xuantianling connects to Wangyun Mountain in the east and Yangjialing in the west. Mountain paths link park scenery with routes uphill. Park areas and the entrance to Xuandi Temple are in different places; follow on-site signs.

Open paths lead uphill toward Xuandi Temple, or you can take a shorter walk within the park. Park paths, mountain trails and temple courtyards may have different access rules. Confirm the entrance and areas open that day before setting out.

Choosing a visit length

Allow half a day if you want to combine the trails with Xuandi Temple. If you have limited energy or the temple is closed, walk only in the open park areas.

Xuandi Temple and its courtyards

Local reports date Xuandi Temple to 1738, the third year of the Qianlong reign. The main sights include the entrance gate, temple halls and the rear Doumu Palace. The “suspended beams and hanging columns” (悬梁吊柱) are a distinctive feature. Check on-site management for which halls are open and where photography is allowed.

Reports also mention a statue of Laozi riding an ox, the “Xuantian Shengjing” archway and Yuxian Bridge. View them along the open route; maintenance or events may affect access. The mountain path also has themed stone carvings, including “Laozi Leaves the Pass” and “Fuxi Draws the Trigrams.” Leave room for others to pass and follow temple etiquette inside the halls.

Paotaishan and city views

Paotaishan (炮台山), part of the Xuantianling mountain area, takes its name from the defensive gun emplacements built here in the late Qing dynasty. In 1893, Jilin's military governor received approval to construct fortifications on Xuantianling to strengthen the city's defenses. The historic battery remains are protected heritage structures.

From higher ground along the open paths, you may get views over Jilin City on a clear day. Stay outside fenced or closed historic areas, and take extra care when paths are icy or visibility is poor.

For a separate riverside walk in the city, see Songhua Riverfront (Jilin City).

Build your day

Park paths and Xuandi Temple

Make Xuandi Temple your main destination and follow signs from an open entrance. If the paths and Baerhu Ridge viewpoint are open and you have the energy, extend the visit as an out-and-back walk. Walking time depends on the entrance, slopes and stops; allow half a day rather than assuming a fixed loop. If someone in your group has difficulty climbing, use a shorter open path near the entrance. The mountain route has slopes and steps and is not level throughout.

Winter visit and nearby dining

For winter snow or rime, check the weather and road conditions, wear shoes with good grip and bring warm clothing. Do not cross barriers or enter closed woodland during snow or wind. Nearby Wangyun Shijiu Fang and other neighborhood venues can be an option for food once you confirm they are open. Shows and lights in the neighborhood do not mean Xuandi Temple is open at night.

Get there

Navigation and local transport

Search for “玄天岭文化公园” or “玄帝观,” and confirm that your navigation pin is at an open entrance. Xuandi Temple is mapped around Wangyun Street in Chuanying District; after entering the park, you still need to walk uphill. Check outbound and return bus services for the day. You can also take a taxi, but agree on a pickup point for the return trip.

Parking and supplies

Before driving, confirm the day's entrance and parking location. Park only where signs allow; do not block residential lanes or roads around historic remains. Supplies are limited on the mountain, so bring water and plan to eat in the city or in a nearby area you have confirmed is open.

Know before you go

Access, tickets and registration

Paths, courtyards and temple halls may be managed separately. Before visiting, check entrance notices for access, registration, fees and the last entry time for the temple. Religious activities, construction and weather may affect routes. Nearby businesses being open does not mean the temple halls are open.

Mountain safety and protection of historic remains

Trails can be slippery after rain or snow. Use only paths open that day. Do not climb on or touch the fortifications, historic buildings or stone carvings, and do not cross barriers. Follow on-site directions if there is a religious event, construction or a weather warning, and follow the posted rules for photography inside the halls.
