Area, entrances and ticket coverage
Jiaoling Changtan Tourist Area is in Changtan Town, Jiaoling County, inside the Changtan Provincial Nature Reserve. Common starting points are Changtan Pier and the Changtan Scenic Area car park. General access is free and usually does not require a reservation; boat trips are separate. A return boat ticket costs around CNY 50 per person, children under 1.2 metres are usually half-price, and a boat generally departs after around four passengers have gathered.
A return boat trip takes around 50 minutes. Charter options have separate prices and durations. Boats generally operate from 08:00 to 18:00, but may not sail on quiet weekdays if there are not enough passengers. Land access and boat operation should not be treated as the same opening condition.
Suggested time and visit expectations
Allow 2–3 hours for the lake, the Cyathea Rare Plant Garden and a walk around the pier. With Baima Village Mixiang Centre, a boat trip and lakeside rest, allow 4–5 hours. Camping, nearby waterfalls and a two-day plan require separate checks for accommodation, supplies and operating status.
Use the reservoir as the main plan. Do not make Yixiantian, nearby exhibitions or other activities fixed requirements when their opening status may change. First secure the lake and pier visit, then add surrounding stops.

Changtan Reservoir and karst scenery
The reservoir is surrounded by connected hills, and a boat gives a different view of the water and mountain landscape. Even without a boat, the pier and lakeside paths can support a relaxed visit. The water view depends on weather, light and surface conditions, so boating is an experience option rather than a guarantee of a particular landscape.
Around 16:00 the light is often softer for the lake and mountain silhouettes. Visitors who want sunset views should confirm the return vehicle before waiting by the water, rather than treating the last boat or an unfamiliar road after dark as a safety plan.
Cyathea Garden and Baima Village Mixiang Centre
The Cyathea Rare Plant Garden is a stop along some boat routes, where visitors can see cyathea trees and the forest environment. Baima Village Mixiang Centre uses a former primary school and includes rice fields, a rainbow path, a rice-field train and a rice-themed art museum, making it suitable for families and rural photography.
The Mixiang Centre and Changtan Pier have different entrances and require a drive between them. The train, exhibitions and surrounding facilities may operate on specific dates, so leave room to adjust after arrival.
Gaotai Nunnery, Yixiantian and who it suits
Gaotai Nunnery sits on the hillside and can add a higher view of the reservoir. Yixiantian is a natural rock gap beside the road, but its operating and management status can change. Visitors who enjoy less-developed scenery can decide on site; do not compress the main reservoir visit to chase an uncertain point.
Build your day
A 2–3-hour reservoir route
Start at Changtan Pier and confirm whether boats are operating. If a boat departs, take the lake trip, return to walk in the Cyathea Garden or around the pier, and wait by the lake for a suitable light period. If the boat does not depart because there are too few passengers, use the pier and lakeside walk instead of changing the whole day.
Transport and supplies around the reservoir are limited. Confirm the return vehicle and parking location before waiting for sunset, and do not estimate the whole day from the boat's 50-minute duration alone.
A 4–5-hour mountain-and-rural route
Visit Baima Village Mixiang Centre in the morning for the rice-field train, path and art museum. In the afternoon, go to Changtan Pier, confirm the boat service and rest by the lake or have a picnic towards evening. The two areas require a drive, so check both parking locations first.
For a lakeside picnic or camping stop, bring water, insect protection and a way to take rubbish away. If the boat, weather or rural facilities change, use the time for a lake and village walk rather than making an unavailable activity the only reason to stay.
A two-day Jiaoling route
On day one, visit Changtan Reservoir and Mixiang Centre and stay near Baima Village. On day two, choose Qiu Fengjia Former Residence, the Qiu Chengtong International Conference Centre, Longtan Waterfall or Yixiantian according to the day's opening status. Indoor exhibitions and natural sites may have separate tickets or changes, so confirm each one.
Get there
Driving and high-speed rail transfers
Driving to “Changtan Scenic Area Car Park” or “Mixiang Centre” is convenient. The trip takes around 3–4 hours from the Pearl River Delta and about one hour from Meizhou city; the pier and nearby points usually have free parking. A taxi from Meizhou West Railway Station takes around 50–60 minutes. Bus services are infrequent, so do not make the bus your only arrival plan.
The Changtan points are spread out. After parking, confirm whether you are at the pier, Mixiang Centre or another attraction. Self-driving is more realistic for connecting them, but mountain roads and an evening return still require conservative planning.
Know before you go
Boats, weather and nearby opening status
Boats may not depart on quiet weekdays if there are not enough passengers, and nearby points such as Yixiantian can be closed. Call or check at the pier before buying a ticket, then decide how much of the day to assign to the boat.
Rain, wind and visibility affect the lake experience and photography. The reservoir walk should remain the main plan; when a boat or nearby facility changes, do not approach wet rock faces to make up the difference.
Supplies, camping and meals
The area is remote, with limited restaurants and convenience stores. Carry water, snacks and insect protection. If camping by the lake, use an area where camping is allowed, take all rubbish away and protect against wind; do not stay overnight in an unmanaged or unlit location.
Jiaoling Sanjidi soup, Hakka stuffed tofu, lake fish and bamboo-shoot rice cakes can be arranged in Changtan Town, Baima Village or along the return route. Restaurant hours are separate from the scenic area's opening information and should be confirmed on arrival.
