Plan at a glance

Golden Summit is inside the scenic area

Golden Summit is Wugong Mountain's highest point, at 1,918.3 metres, inside the scenic area in Maotian Town, Luxi County. Visitors first use internal transport and trails to reach the mountain, then complete the final ascent. Navigation and ticketing should be planned around the Wugong Mountain scenic-area entrance; Golden Summit itself has no separate visitor centre at the foot.

Tickets and time needed

The scenic-area adult ticket is CNY 70 and the student ticket is CNY 50. Zhong'an Cableway costs CNY 65 uphill and CNY 50 downhill; Golden Summit Cableway costs CNY 35 uphill and CNY 25 downhill. All are paid separately. The scenic area currently opens at 08:00; cableways run about 08:30–17:10 in peak season and 08:30–16:30 off-peak, with possible holiday extensions. Allow about 2–3 hours for both cableways plus a short walk, or 5–6 hours for the ridge highlights route.

Choose your visit

The summit stele and Tianlu Walkway (天路栈道)

After reaching the summit, the first priority is the Golden Summit stele at 1,918.3 metres. The Tianlu Walkway (天路栈道) follows the ridge and is a major part of the summit experience. The stele is the place to mark the high point, while Tianlu is suited to photographs of the continuous ridge and meadow lines; the area in front of the stele can be crowded on holidays.

Meadows, sunrise and cloud seas

The alpine meadows around Golden Summit are best explored with a slow walk after arrival. You can plan sunrise photography for 05:00–07:00. Cloud seas are more likely after rain clears, but wind, dampness and visibility change each day, and open walkway sections may also change with the weather.

Loops and suitable visitors

Visitors with enough time and energy can walk the Xingkong Walkway (星空栈道) or Fuxinggu Boardwalk (福星谷栈道) around the summit. Those who mainly want the hilltop views can take the cableways and make a short walk after arriving. Hikers, nature lovers and ridge photographers can focus on the trail from Diaomazhuang (吊马桩) to Golden Summit.

Build your day

2–3-hour low-effort summit route

Take both cableways to the Golden Summit Cableway upper station, then walk about 20–30 minutes to the main Golden Summit viewing area. Visit the summit stele, Tianlu Walkway (天路栈道) and alpine meadows in sequence, then return according to the cableway last departure and queue. This suits visitors short on time or with average fitness.

5–6-hour ridge highlights route

For the ridge hike to the summit, the line passes Haohanpo (好汉坡), the Xingkong Walkway (星空栈道) and Diaomazhuang (吊马桩) before continuing uphill to Golden Summit. Tianlu has many steps, especially the more than 3,000 steps from Diaomazhuang (吊马桩) to Golden Summit. After reaching the summit, allow time for the stele, meadows and walkways, then descend along the day's available return route.

A short loop after reaching the summit

After visiting the stele, meadows and main Tianlu section, continue to the Xingkong Walkway (星空栈道) or Fuxinggu Boardwalk (福星谷栈道) if it is open. Loop length and open sections may change. Return to the downhill route available that day and follow the sections shown on site.

Get there

From the railway stations to the scenic-area start

Reach Pingxiang North Railway Station or Pingxiang Railway Station, then take the official bus to the Wugong Mountain Visitor Service Center for about CNY 27 and 1–1.5 hours. A shared taxi or taxi from the station costs about CNY 30–40 per person. The mountain road is winding and can cause motion sickness. At the Visitor Service Center, change to the free scenic-area shuttle to Shigu Temple, then continue by cableway or trail.

Reservation, parking and the return

Around holidays, consider buying tickets in advance through the official Wugong Mountain WeChat account or mini program, and include cableway queues and last departures in the return plan. Drivers should navigate to the Pingxiang Wugong Mountain Scenic Area Visitor Service Center, which has a large car park. Summit visitors park below the mountain; there is no road for private cars to reach the summit.

Know before you go

The most demanding section

The Tianlu section from Diaomazhuang (吊马桩) to Golden Summit has more than 3,000 steps, and the continuous stone steps use considerable energy. A hiking pole and shoes with good grip are useful. The summit is windy, damp and prone to insects, so bring a windproof warm layer even on a sunny day.

Accommodation and supplies on the mountain

Summit accommodation is generally basic. Open-air tents are exposed to wind, dampness and weather; visitors who want more comfort can prioritise a Starry Sky Room (星空房) with a private bathroom or an indoor tent. Food on the mountain is limited and more expensive, so bring instant noodles, self-heating rice and enough drinking water. After descending, you can try Lianhua Blood Duck (莲花血鸭) and Pingxiang fried rice noodles in the city.

Weather and viewing hours

Plan sunrise and cloud-sea viewing for 05:00–07:00; conditions are more favourable after rain clears, but good sunrise or cloud-sea views are never guaranteed. Summit walkways, cableway operations, holiday extensions and downhill queues may all change during the day. If you stay overnight or need to catch the last cableway, include changes in wind, rain and visibility at the summit.
