Plan at a glance
Location and entrance
The scenic area is in Maotian Town, Luxi County, Pingxiang, Jiangxi. First-time visitors should navigate to the “Pingxiang Wugong Mountain Scenic Area Visitor Service Center,” then take the free scenic-area shuttle to the Shigu Temple gate. The Visitor Service Center is not the hiking trail itself; Shigu Temple is the main sightseeing starting point.
Tickets and timing
The adult ticket is CNY 70 and the student ticket is CNY 50. Zhong'an Cableway and Golden Summit Cableway require separate tickets: CNY 65 up and CNY 50 down for Zhong'an, and CNY 35 up and CNY 25 down for Golden Summit. The scenic area currently opens at 08:00; cableways run about 08:30–17:10 in the peak season and 08:30–16:30 in the off-peak season, with possible holiday extensions. If you depend on the cableways for either direction, include their operating window in the day's plan.

Alpine meadows and the summit
The broad alpine meadows are Wugong Mountain's most representative landscape. The 1,918.3-metre Golden Summit, ridge trails and high-altitude glass walkway form the main sightseeing experience. Visitors who enjoy nature and hiking can prioritise Diaomazhuang (吊马桩), the summit and the meadows; those who mainly want the mountain views can save their energy for the short walk after taking both cableways.
Cloud seas, sunrise and photography points
Plan for cloud seas and sunrise between 05:00 and 07:00. They are relatively more likely after rain clears, but the result still depends on the weather. The hillside opposite Juewangpo (绝望坡) works well for photographs of people walking the ridge, Diaomazhuang (吊马桩) is useful for a full view of the meadows, and the meadow east of the summit is less backlit for a wide sunrise shot.
Which style of visit suits you
Hikers and visitors who want the high-mountain scenery can choose the formally open highlights route within the scenic area. Older adults, children, visitors with average fitness and anyone short on time may prefer both cableways plus a short hike. Routes through undeveloped or unopened areas are not suitable for ordinary visitors.
For a separate post-hike soaking option near Wugong Mountain, see Wugong Mountain Junlan Hot Spring.
Build your day
2–3-hour two-cableway express route
From the Shigu Temple gate, take Zhong'an Cableway uphill, then walk towards the Golden Summit Cableway lower station via Ziji Palace (紫极宫) and Fuxinggu (福星谷). Take the second cableway and continue on foot for about 20–30 minutes to the main Golden Summit viewing area. This is the least strenuous way to reach the summit, suited to visitors who want to spend most of the day viewing the summit and meadows rather than completing a long hike; arrange the return around the day's cableway operations and queues.
5–6-hour highlights route
Start at Shigu Temple, take Zhong'an Cableway to Ziji Palace (紫极宫), then follow Haohanpo (好汉坡), the Xingkong Walkway (星空栈道) and Diaomazhuang (吊马桩) to the Golden Summit. This route keeps the continuous walk from the mid-mountain area to the ridge and the main scenery. It suits first-time visitors with some hiking fitness; on weekends or holidays, you can hike from the summit down to Zhong'an and take Zhong'an Cableway downhill.
Safety rules for undeveloped areas
Wugong Mountain has historically been associated with outdoor routes from Shenzicun, Longshan Village and other locations that enter undeveloped areas. Under the scenic area's safety rules, visitors should go up and down through formal scenic-area entrances. Do not enter unofficial or unopened hiking routes, and do not organise or join backcountry traverses through undeveloped areas.
Get there
High-speed rail and the mountain transfer
You can arrive at Pingxiang North Railway Station or Pingxiang Railway Station. From either station, take the official shuttle bus to the Visitor Service Center; the fare is about CNY 27 and the ride takes about 1–1.5 hours. The mountain road is winding and can cause motion sickness. A shared taxi or taxi costs about CNY 30–40 per person, and you still need to change to the free scenic-area shuttle at the Visitor Service Center for Shigu Temple.
Driving and parking
Set the “Pingxiang Wugong Mountain Scenic Area Visitor Service Center” as the driving destination. The Visitor Service Center has a large car park. The Visitor Service Center and Shigu Temple gate are two consecutive parts of the arrival process: follow the signs to the scenic-area shuttle and begin the mountain visit afterward. Informal trailheads on the Ji'an side are not part of the formal scenic-area itinerary.
Know before you go
Queues and the descent
When crowds are heavy on holidays, the lower stations of Zhong'an and Golden Summit Cableways may use QR queue numbers. During peak periods, buy the cableway ticket online first, then scan the code on site to take a number and wait for your number to be called. The day's rules, missed-number handling and last departure time take priority. On weekends and holidays, the direct downhill queue from the summit may be slow; you can hike down to Zhong'an and take Zhong'an Cableway downhill instead.
Weather, clothing and a hilltop stay
The summit is windy and temperatures change quickly, so bring a windproof warm layer even on a sunny day. The route has many stone steps, and shoes with good grip are more secure. Hilltop accommodation is basic; if you need charging or hot water, ask at the “Golden Summit Emergency Shelter Service Point” (Party Member Station). Snacks and drinking water cost more on the mountain, so carry supplies for a longer route.
Rest below the mountain and itinerary combinations
After descending, you can rest at the Wo Zai Zhongtian Farm Café at the foot of the mountain. If you are driving along the Luwanwu Tourist Highway, roadside restaurants such as Yutou Farmer are options. Sunrise, cloud seas, cableway extensions, scenic-area shuttles and related service points all depend on weather and operations, so the day's plan needs room to change.
