Treat it as an outing outside the ancient city
Shuanglin Temple is in Qiaotou Village southwest of Pingyao County, about 6 km from Pingyao Ancient City. The scenic-area gate has its own ticket check. It is outside the ancient city and does not use the CNY 125 ancient-city pass, so arrange the outbound and return transport separately.
The temple was formerly called Zhongdu Temple and was renamed Shuanglin Temple during the Song dynasty. More than 2,000 painted sculptures remain. Visitors interested in historic buildings, sculpture and dimly lit displays can allow 1–3 hours. Supplies in the village are limited, so returning to the ancient city is usually easier for a full meal or accommodation.
Tickets, reservations and hours
Adult tickets cost about CNY 33–35, while student and older-visitor tickets cost about CNY 15. Tickets are sold separately and do not include the ancient-city pass. When buying on site, check the day’s ticket, concession conditions and opening notice.
Opening hours are 8:00–18:30, with admission ending at 18:15. The restoration and restricted-access area at the Thousand-Buddha Hall is a changing condition. After entering, read the barriers and viewing directions before choosing the short or complete route.

The Heavenly Kings Hall and Shakyamuni Hall
Outside the Heavenly Kings Hall are painted sculptures of the Four Heavenly Kings, about 3 m high and an important highlight of the Yuan-dynasty hall. Continue along the central axis to Shakyamuni Hall, where the walls carry suspended scenes from the Buddha’s life and the back of the screen wall has a Guanyin Crossing the Sea sculpture. The interiors are dim, so let your eyes adjust before studying the poses, layers and relationship between sculpture and space.
These two halls give visitors with limited time a first understanding of Shuanglin’s sculpture. The Shakyamuni Hall’s storytelling comes from the continuous suspended scenes and the interior walls. Follow the on-site route and view the full display rather than reducing it to a photograph of one statue.
The Thousand-Buddha, Arhat and Bodhisattva halls
The Thousand-Buddha Hall contains the celebrated Weituo statue, often described as “the finest Weituo under heaven,” and a relaxed-pose Guanyin (Zizai Guanyin). The Weituo is about 1.6 m high with an S-shaped twist, while the Guanyin is shown with one leg raised. The hall is currently partially closed for restoration, so confirm the visible areas and viewing angles on arrival.
The complete route also includes the Eighteen Song-dynasty Arhats in the Arhat Hall and the Thousand-Armed Guanyin in the Bodhisattva Hall. These are different viewing subjects. Choose the time for each according to the open spaces, and do not use pre-restoration photographs as a promise of the current view.
Build your day
A 1–1.5 hour short route
Enter through the scenic-area gate and begin with the Four Heavenly Kings outside the Heavenly Kings Hall. Continue along the central axis to Shakyamuni Hall for the suspended scenes from the Buddha’s life and the Guanyin Crossing the Sea, then proceed to the Thousand-Buddha Hall. Follow the restoration barriers and open passage to view the Weituo and relaxed-pose Guanyin before leaving through the exit. Allow 1–1.5 hours.
If the visible area of the Thousand-Buddha Hall is reduced, complete the Heavenly Kings Hall and Shakyamuni Hall first, then spend time in the open areas. The short route ends at Shuanglin Temple’s exit; the 6 km return to the ancient city and any waiting time for transport are additional. The temple exit does not connect to the walking routes inside the ancient city.
A 2–3 hour complete route
For the full central-axis visit, start at the entrance and continue through the Heavenly Kings Hall, Shakyamuni Hall and Thousand-Buddha Hall, then enter the Arhat Hall and Bodhisattva Hall before returning to the exit. Allow 2–3 hours. Dim light, iron grilles and queues affect the time available in each hall.
During restoration, confirm the area visible in the Thousand-Buddha Hall and then decide how much more time to give the Arhat and Bodhisattva halls. Follow the day’s open route. Arrange the return trip after completing the temple rather than repeatedly turning back to find a view blocked by a barrier.
Connect with another temple outside the city
Shuanglin Temple is often combined with Zhenguo Temple in one day, but the two temples are more than 10 km apart and have separate entrances, tickets and transport. If you plan both, decide where the driver or vehicle will wait before starting, then set the order according to the day’s opening hours. They cannot be linked by walking inside the ancient city.
Food options in the village around Shuanglin are limited, so visitors on the complete route usually return to Pingyao Ancient City for a meal. Shuanglin can fit in the morning or afternoon, but the outbound journey, temple visit and return transport require their own time. Arrange the return before evening rather than looking for a vehicle at the last minute.
Get there
Bus 108 directions
Some Bus 108 services or directions stop at Shuanglin Temple when travelling from the ancient city. Use a real-time bus service before boarding to check the route direction and stop, and ask the driver whether the bus passes Qiaotou Village. The actual travel time and departures depend on the day’s bus arrangements.
Ride-hailing cars are limited in Pingyao. A taxi or hired car is more suitable when you need a clear return plan. Confirm the destination, price and whether the driver will wait; return according to the agreed waiting arrangement or the bus service, as a last-minute car may not be available.
Moving before and after the visit
The scenic-area gate checks tickets directly. Leave the vehicle at the permitted parking or drop-off position and walk through the gate. Shuanglin is outside the ancient city, so the city’s electric carts and walking routes inside the ancient city cannot replace this transfer.
After the visit, return from the gate to the bus stop, taxi waiting point or hired-car meeting point. If Zhenguo Temple is next, agree on the departure time and waiting location in advance. The temples are more than 10 km apart, and there is currently no reliable fixed shuttle price or timetable to use as a plan.
Know before you go
Restoration at the Thousand-Buddha Hall
The Thousand-Buddha Hall has been partially closed for conservation work since July 2026, with work expected to continue through the second half of 2028. The construction area, barriers and open passage may change. Confirm the complete view of the Weituo and relaxed-pose Guanyin, the accessible areas and the expected completion timing on arrival.
Some parts of the hall may remain accessible, but that does not mean every sculpture can be seen in full. Follow the day’s barriers and staff directions, accept that construction may reduce the available view, and do not cross the work line to recreate an older viewpoint.
Protecting the sculptures and taking photographs
The halls are dim, and some areas have iron grilles. Let your eyes adjust before looking for details. Follow the rules for camera lighting, flash, distance and stopping time; keep away from wood and clay sculptures, murals and barriers.
Do not touch or scrape the sculptures, and do not cross the iron grilles for a close photograph. The area outside the Heavenly Kings Hall and the door and window frames of Shakyamuni Hall can provide good compositions, but make room at passages and thresholds for other visitors. Conservation rules take priority.
Transport, supplies and explanations
Food options in the village are limited. Bring water and a small amount of food according to your group’s needs, while planning a full meal back in Pingyao Ancient City. A guide or audio guide may be available; read the day’s service information and do not follow unsolicited offers that would change your route.
The 1–1.5 hour short route includes the main central-axis stops. The 2–3 hour complete route adds the Arhat and Bodhisattva halls. Confirm the return bus, driver waiting arrangement and next stop before leaving; arrange this outside-city transport before closing, not after the temple has closed.
