Plan it as an outing outside the city
Zhenguo Temple is in Haodong Village, about 15 km northeast of Pingyao County. The scenic-area gate checks tickets directly. The temple is outside Pingyao Ancient City and sells its own tickets. Its main focus is the Five Dynasties timber structure of the Ten-Thousand-Buddha Hall, painted sculptures and beam inscriptions, and the travel time usually takes a larger share of the day than an attraction inside the city.
The temple is not large. Allow about one hour for a short route or 1.5–2 hours for a deeper visit. Visitors interested in early timber structures, Buddhist sculpture and restoration inscriptions can stay longer. Food options in the village are limited, so returning to the ancient city is usually the more practical meal plan.
Tickets and opening hours
Adult tickets cost about CNY 25, while student and older-visitor tickets cost about CNY 10. Tickets are sold separately and do not include the CNY 125 ancient-city pass. Confirm the day’s ticket and concession conditions when buying.
The current opening hours are 8:00–18:30, with admission ending at 18:15. The indoor viewing areas and photography rules at the Ten-Thousand-Buddha Hall, Three-Buddha Tower and Heavenly Kings Hall follow the day’s notice. For an evening return, finish the temple route first and then follow the agreed driver or bus arrangement.

The timber structure of the Ten-Thousand-Buddha Hall
The Ten-Thousand-Buddha Hall was built in 963, the seventh year of the Tianhui era of the Northern Han during the Five Dynasties period. It is three bays wide and three bays deep, with a single-eave hip-and-gable roof. Its large seven-puzuo bracket sets and deep eaves retain a Tang-style character. Since July 2026, the hall has been partially closed for restoration, with work expected to continue through the second half of 2027. Whether you can enter and which angles are available depend on the day; from outside, you can still study the eaves and the proportions of the column grid.
The hall uses a full mortise-and-tenon structure without nails. If the open area allows entry, look at the building together with the painted sculptures inside. If barriers are in place, focus on the frame, deep eaves and exterior proportions rather than entering a restricted area for an older viewpoint.
Five Dynasties sculptures and beam inscriptions
The Ten-Thousand-Buddha Hall preserves 11 Five Dynasties painted sculptures. Their style sits between the full forms of Tang sculpture and the more elongated proportions of the Song period; the S-shaped poses of the attendant bodhisattvas are especially worth observing. The beams also retain ink inscriptions from repairs carried out during the Five Dynasties, Jin, Yuan, Ming and Qing periods. Which sculptures and inscriptions are visible depends on the restoration access area.
The Heavenly Kings Hall shows Yuan-dynasty architecture with Four Heavenly Kings sculpted in the Ming dynasty and repainted in the Qing dynasty. The Three-Buddha Tower contains 52 Qing-dynasty murals depicting the Buddha’s life, as well as a Jin-dynasty iron bell. These stops represent timber architecture, sculpture, murals and objects; follow them gradually on the deeper route.
Build your day
A one-hour short route
Enter through the scenic-area gate and start at the Heavenly Kings Hall. Continue to the exterior of the Ten-Thousand-Buddha Hall or the areas open that day to view its Five Dynasties timber structure and sculptures. Then see the ancient Dragon Scholar Tree (Longhuai, 龙槐) outside or in the open area before leaving through the exit. Allow about one hour. The route keeps the temple’s most important architectural and natural reference points without promising full access to the Ten-Thousand-Buddha Hall.
Calculate the return from the temple exit: the roughly 15 km drive to the ancient city, waiting time and driver meeting time are additional. If someone in your group is taking only the short route, meet at the exit and then return by the agreed hired car or taxi rather than looking for food or a vehicle in the village at the last minute.
A 1.5–2 hour deeper route
Start at the Heavenly Kings Hall. Within the areas open that day, examine the Five Dynasties structure, 11 painted sculptures and beam inscriptions of the Ten-Thousand-Buddha Hall. Continue to the Three-Buddha Tower for the Qing Buddhist-life murals, then see the Jin iron bell and leave through the exit. Allow 1.5–2 hours; dim interiors, iron grilles and restoration barriers affect the pace of detail viewing.
The deeper route can include the side of the Ten-Thousand-Buddha Hall, the Dragon Scholar Tree and the Heavenly Kings Hall in a photography sequence. If the Three-Buddha Tower or another area has temporary access limits, follow the open route and keep the timber and sculpture views available rather than repeatedly turning back to a closed space.
Combine it with Shuanglin Temple
Zhenguo Temple is often combined with Shuanglin Temple in one day, but the two temples are more than 10 km apart and have entirely separate tickets, entrances and indoor routes. For a combined visit, decide where the vehicle and driver will wait first, then set the order according to the day’s opening hours. There is currently no reliable fixed walking or bus shuttle route between the temples.
You can visit Shuanglin in the morning and Zhenguo in the afternoon, or reverse the order. Add the transport between the temples to the 1–2 hours at each site. Include dinner and accommodation back in the ancient city in the return plan; village supplies around Zhenguo cannot be assumed to match the city’s options.
Get there
Car and hired-vehicle arrangements
Zhenguo Temple is about 15 km from Pingyao Ancient City, and public-transport services are limited. Visitors who need a dependable return can arrange a hired car in advance or agree on a flat fare and waiting arrangement with a taxi driver. Before departure, confirm the destination as Zhenguo Temple Scenic Area in Haodong Village rather than allowing the driver to navigate only to “Pingyao Ancient City.”
Treat the outbound journey, temple visit and return as three separate sections. The driver should wait at the permitted parking or drop-off area. There is no reliable common reference for a fixed departure schedule, hired-car price or travel time, so discuss the day’s arrangements directly rather than assuming a number.
Entering and returning
The scenic-area gate checks tickets directly. Follow either the short or deeper route after entering. On departure, return through the same scenic-area exit to the vehicle or bus waiting point. Before leaving, confirm phone signal, the driver’s location and the direction of the next stop; arrange the return before the temple closes.
If Shuanglin Temple is the next stop, confirm the departure time before leaving the first temple. Zhenguo is outside the ancient city’s walking area, so electric carts, South Street and the city gates cannot replace the outside-city transfer.
Know before you go
Dim interiors, iron grilles and photography
The interiors of the Ten-Thousand-Buddha Hall and Three-Buddha Tower are dim, and iron grilles stand in front of some sculptures and murals. Let your eyes adjust before looking at the sculptures, inscriptions and timber frames. Follow the hall signs for photographs, video, flash, supplementary lighting and distance; do not move closer to the grilles for a detail shot.
Do not touch painted sculptures, murals, timber frames or the iron bell, and do not cross iron grilles or stand on steps for a higher angle. The side of the Ten-Thousand-Buddha Hall and the Dragon Scholar Tree can frame the building’s outline. Confirm permission before photographing indoors; conservation takes priority over the result of a photograph.
Explanations and viewing pace
The temple brings together information on building dates, bracket sets, mortise-and-tenon construction, Five Dynasties sculptures and beam inscriptions. An official guide or audio guide may be available; ask at the scenic area. Follow the Heavenly Kings Hall, the open areas of the Ten-Thousand-Buddha Hall, the Three-Buddha Tower and the iron bell in sequence to complete the 1.5–2 hour deeper route.
The temple is compact, but the actual time inside depends on the open areas and photography rules. If a beam inscription or sculpture interests you, pause at the permitted distance and then continue along the passage so other visitors can use the viewing position.
Village supplies and the return trip
Zhenguo is in a village with few nearby food options. Bring water and a small amount of food if useful for your group; a full meal is usually easier back in Pingyao Ancient City. Confirm the hired car, taxi or bus return plan before leaving, because last-minute vehicles and food choices in the village are limited.
