A free coastal island park
Xiaomai Island Park is west of Maidao Road in Laoshan District. It is free, needs no reservation and can be entered throughout the day. The common entrance is the northwest gate, reached via Mai Lang Bridge. The island boardwalk is about 2.5 km; allow 2–3 hours for the complete walk or 40–60 minutes for a short route.
Sunset and limited supplies
The western lawn and rocky shore are good for sunset. Core facilities such as toilets are usually more reliably available around 09:00–17:00. There are few vendors on the island, so bring water and snacks. Parking is tight from May to October and on weekends; public transport is easier.

Island boardwalk and lawns
The boardwalk follows the coast around the island, with lawn on one side and sea on the other, giving continuous views in different directions. The openwork stone wall, Five Pines, pink lighthouse and western sunset lawn are useful photography stops. There is little shade, and conditions can change quickly in summer and toward evening.
The Lonely Tree and sunset coast
The “Lonely Tree” stands on a grassy slope facing the sea, with views of the tree, lawn and city skyline. For sunset, focus on the western lawn and viewing platform. The area becomes busier in the evening, so arrive earlier and stay within the safe areas of the boardwalk and lawn.

The 2–3 hour island loop
Enter from the northwest gate via Mai Lang Bridge and walk the island boardwalk counterclockwise. Pass the openwork stone wall and Five Pines first, then continue to the Lonely Tree, pink lighthouse and western sunset lawn. The boardwalk gives you a fairly complete loop; once at the west side, set your stop and return around sunset time.
The 40–60 minute short route
Enter from the northwest gate and go directly to the Lonely Tree and western viewing platform for coastal and sunset photos, then return the same way. If you skip the full loop, allow enough time to walk back from the west side to the entrance.
Get there
Metro and bus
Take Metro Line 2 to Maidao Station and walk about 12–15 minutes from Exit E or A. You can also leave at Haiyou Road Station through Exit B, walk about 8 minutes to Haizhiliang Park, then follow the boardwalk to Xiaomai Island. Buses 225, 232 and 316 stop at “Donghai Middle Road–Maidao Road”; walk about 4 minutes from the stop.
Parking and island access
If driving, navigate to “Maidao Road Parking Lot,” which has about 650 spaces. Parking is tight from May to October and on weekends; arriving before 09:00 is better. The northwest gate reaches the island via Mai Lang Bridge. Vehicles cannot enter the island, so continue on foot along the boardwalk.

All-day access and supplies
The park is open throughout the day and needs no reservation, but toilets and similar facilities are usually more reliable around 09:00–17:00. Vendors are scarce, so bring water and snacks. Before leaving at dusk, allow for your remaining energy and the walk back to the entrance.
Sun, cooling temperatures and tide
The coast is windy and has little shade. Use sun protection during the day and bring a light jacket because temperatures fall quickly after sunset. Rocks become slippery when wet; check the tide before going, stay out of low rocks during high tide, and do not approach dangerous waves for photos.
