A free coastal stop
Zhanqiao Pier is in the Taiping Road area of Qingdao's Shinan District. It is free to visit and open throughout the day. From Exit G at Qingdao Railway Station, it takes about 5 minutes to walk to the waterfront; 30–50 minutes is enough for the pier and Huilan Pavilion.
Huilan Pavilion and the seagull season
Huilan Pavilion is the octagonal pavilion at the end of Zhanqiao Pier. It has set opening hours, usually 09:00–16:30. Hours may shift slightly in peak or off-peak seasons, so follow the notice posted on site; when open, you can climb the pavilion for a panoramic view over Qingdao Bay. Overwintering seagulls are easier to see from October through April, while activity is usually lower in other months. Whether feeding the gulls is suitable depends on the conditions that day.

Walk out over the bay
Walk along the pier toward the sea to see Huilan Pavilion, the water and the old-town shoreline. For a first look at Qingdao's coast, Zhanqiao is an easy starting point. If anyone in your group cannot manage a long walk, the entrance and near-shore area still offer the main views.
Coastal photography and seasonal birdwatching
The pier works well for photos of the structure, Huilan Pavilion, the sea and seagulls. From October through April, gulls are more concentrated; the coast around Xilingxia Road and Li Weiran Park can offer long views back toward the pier and pavilion.

The 30–50 minute short route
Leave Qingdao Railway Station through Exit G, walk to Zhanqiao Pier, follow the pier toward Huilan Pavilion, then return the same way. When time is tight, the wind is strong or a companion does not want a long walk, stay near the shore and focus on the pavilion and coastal views.
A 2–3 hour old-town walk
Use Zhanqiao as the starting point for an old-town walk, then continue to St. Michael's Cathedral or Zhongshan Road Commercial Street. The pier and entrance area become crowded on holidays; weekdays or earlier hours are better for photos and a slower walk.
Get there
Metro and bus
Take Metro Line 3 to Qingdao Railway Station and leave through Exit G. The waterfront is about a 5-minute walk away. Buses also stop at “Zhanqiao”; walk from the stop into the coastal area.
Parking and footwear
Parking around Zhanqiao is limited, and traffic is often heavy during peak travel periods and holidays. Public transport is a better choice for a short visit. The waterfront paths, beach and rocks have different surfaces, so wear shoes with good grip that are comfortable for walking.

Sea conditions and boat touts
The pier and near-shore area are busier on holidays and in peak travel periods. Be cautious with boat trips promoted by people approaching you on the street, and check the terms before buying. Rocks become slippery when wet; in high tide or strong wind and waves, stay within the safe area and do not go farther out to take photos.
