Entrance, scope and visit length
Zhalong Nature Reserve is in Zhalong Town, Tiefeng District, Qiqihar. Set your destination to the visitor center and enter through the main gate. Allow about 1.5–2 hours for a short visit focused on one crane release using paid transport inside the reserve. For the boardwalk, crane viewing area and Crane Culture Museum, allow about 3–4 hours.
The reference ticket price is about CNY 70 per person, including the return shuttle bus. Check online booking details and whether any document-based discounts apply to international visitors. The reference peak-season period is April 16 to October 15, with opening hours of about 7:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m.; the off-season runs from October 16 to April 15, with hours of about 8:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Confirm the season’s hours and last entry time before you go.
Crane release times
Reference release times are 9:30 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. in peak season, and 10:00 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. in the off-season. The reserve’s schedule for the day takes precedence. Hot weather, the cranes’ molting period and other management decisions may affect releases, so check the day’s schedule before setting out.

Red-crowned cranes and wetlands
A red-crowned crane release is the main viewing experience, and you can also watch the cranes near the viewing platform. Wildlife activity varies; check the day’s schedule before you arrive. Even without a release, the wetland boardwalk offers views of reeds, water and cranes.
Viewing platform, reeds and boardwalk
The shuttle bus stops near the “He Li Yun Tian (鹤唳云天)” sculpture, about 2.4 km from the Crane Viewing Platform (观鹤台). The boardwalk passes through reed wetlands. Walking this exposed stretch without taking the small train or boat adds sun exposure and physical effort.
Who will enjoy it
The reserve suits visitors interested in wetlands, birds and nature, as well as families looking for an outdoor learning experience. Bird photographers can wait in designated viewing areas, but should not approach, drive away or lure the birds. The reserve cannot guarantee a flight display.
Build your day
Short visit: see one release
Enter at the visitor center and take the shuttle bus included with admission. Near the “He Li Yun Tian” sculpture, transfer to the small train or boat to reduce the walk to the viewing platform. From the small-train stop, it is about a five-minute walk to the platform; after the boat, you will still need to walk some distance. Watch one scheduled activity and return the way you came. Allow about 1.5–2 hours, and first confirm whether the paid transport is operating.
Full visit: boardwalk, viewing platform and museum
After taking the shuttle bus, walk the boardwalk for about 20–30 minutes, then continue to the viewing platform and wait for a scheduled activity. After viewing, spend some time watching the cranes nearby, then visit the Crane Culture Museum and return along the boardwalk. Allow about 3–4 hours; confirm the activity schedule and museum opening separately.
Waiting and return transport
If you want to see a particular release, check the reserve’s schedule for the day and plan your entry transport around it. To get a place near the front of the viewing platform, arrive about 30 minutes early; follow staff directions for where to wait. The last 306 bus back to the city is listed at about 4:30 p.m.; verify the day’s timetable before boarding.

City bus and navigation
Set your destination to “Zhalong Nature Reserve Visitor Center.” After exiting Qiqihar Railway Station, walk about 200 meters to the right to the stop for tourist bus 306. The ride takes about 50 minutes one way and the fare is about CNY 10. Check the stop, departure times and return schedule on the day of travel.
Taxi, driving and transport inside the reserve
A taxi from the city costs about CNY 60–70 as a reference; shared rides may be available near the entrance, but a return vehicle is not guaranteed. Drivers can use the reserve parking lot; the reference fee is about CNY 10 per day. The shuttle-bus stop is still about 2.4 km from the viewing platform. You can walk or pay separately for the small train or boat.
Know before you go
Sun exposure, walking and waiting
There is a long, exposed stretch between the shuttle stop and the viewing platform. In summer, bring sun protection and drinking water; if you do not want to walk, check whether the small train or boat is operating that day. Viewing spots are shared with other visitors. Do not block paths or cross barriers to take photographs.
Wildlife, supplies and other stops
Stay on open boardwalks and in designated viewing areas. Do not feed, touch or chase the red-crowned cranes, and do not use sounds or food to attract them. Food and rest facilities inside the reserve are not confirmed, so arrange your own supplies. After returning to the city, you can visit Longsha Park or Longsha Night Market separately; neither is part of the reserve route.
