Plan at a glance

A stone-forest trail inside Shennongding

Banbi Rock sits inside the Shennongding Scenic Area at about 2,590 metres above sea level. It has a dedicated parking area; from there, walk up the steps to the loop trail. There is no shuttle within the site. If you are driving from the Shennongding East Gate to the West Gate, Banbi Rock works well as a middle or later stop.

Banbi Rock has no separate ticket and is covered by the Shennongding and Shennongjia six-area pass. Its listed opening period is about 07:00–17:00, but high-altitude weather, visitor numbers and the season can affect on-site arrangements. Make reservations through the Shennongjia scenic-area channel.

How much time to allow

The short visit takes about 30 minutes: walk from the parking area to the viewpoint, see the main stone formations, and return the same way. The complete loop is about 2.1 kilometres and usually takes 1–1.5 hours; its second half enters primeval forest and arrow-bamboo woodland, with substantially more walking.

Choose your visit

See the stone forest first, then choose the loop

Banbi Rock is known for slab-like cliffs and stone formations shaped by wind and rain, with arrow bamboo, high-elevation meadows and fir forest between the rocks. Yeren Shi (野人石, “Wild Man Rock”) and Shengming Zhi Gen (生命之根, “Root of Life”) can be identified near the viewpoint, while the open ground opposite the parking area gives a wider view for photographs.

After rain or in mist, the forest trail has a different quality of light and depth. In clear weather, the outlines of the stone forest are easier to see. Visitors interested in landforms and photography can take the full loop; older visitors, young children and anyone looking for a brief stop can stay near the viewpoint.

Build your day

30-minute viewpoint route

Park at the dedicated Banbi Rock car park and follow the steps to the viewing platform. See the stone-forest panorama and Yeren Shi first, then return the same way. This route fits easily between other high-mountain stops on the Shennongding road and gives you a clear exit if the weather turns or energy is limited.

1–1.5-hour complete loop

When time and energy allow, enter the 2.1-kilometre loop from the parking area. The first section passes the stone forest and arrow bamboo; the later section goes through primeval forest before returning to the parking area along the signed route. The loop includes steps and slippery surfaces. In rain or mist, shorten the visit to the viewpoint rather than leaving the formal path to complete the loop.

Continuing along the Shennongding road

After Banbi Rock, return to the parking area and drive to the next point along the Shennongding route or toward the West Gate. Treat it as its own stop; there is no need to repeat the Jinhouling (金猴岭), Shennong Valley or Watchtower sections. Whether Shennong Valley is open does not change the basic short visit at Banbi Rock.

The primeval-forest trail at Taiziya (太子垭) and the Tianji Ling (天际岭) viewpoint can be considered as the next stops along the road, subject to on-site opening arrangements.

Get there

Drive to the dedicated parking area

Banbi Rock is a stopping point within the Shennongding route rather than a separate outside destination. Drive or hire a car through Shennongding on G347, then follow the road signs to the Banbi Rock car park. Because Shennongding’s sights are spread out, tell a hired driver the exact destination instead of relying on a vague nearby place name.

Mountain roads and signal

The high-mountain road has many bends, so slow down before entering the parking area. Parking is usually free, but spaces can be tight in peak periods. Signal may be weak in places; prepare an offline map before leaving, return to your vehicle after the loop, and stay on the formal route through the woodland.

Know before you go

Clothing, weather and safety

Banbi Rock is high in the mountains, where sun, rain and temperature can change quickly. Even in summer, bring a windproof warm layer, rain protection and shoes with good grip. Do not enter the deeper meadow or leave the trail. If the ground is slippery, fog becomes dense or a safety warning appears, return to the viewpoint or car park and follow the local wildlife and trail instructions.

Drone flights are prohibited throughout the area. Do not go deep into the primeval forest alone or remain there after dark. Photograph the stone formations from formal viewing areas rather than climbing the rocks or crossing barriers, and return to the main road in daylight.

Water and food

Food options along Banbi Rock are limited. Stock up on water and snacks in Muyu or Pingqian before entering Shennongding; temporary stalls and other services operate according to the day’s actual conditions.
