A cultural altar beside Muyu Town
Shennong Altar is beside G209 south of Muyu Town and has one main entrance. After entering, start at Ditan Square (地坛广场); the Yandi Shennong statue (炎帝神农像), the stairways and the upper grounds are reached on foot from there. It suits visitors interested in Shennong culture, altar architecture and historical storytelling.
The regular ticket is CNY 55 per person and is also covered by the Shennongjia six-area pass. Current seasonal hours are about 07:30–17:30 from April 1 to October 7 and about 08:00–17:00 from October 8 to March 31; check the day’s notice. Tickets are usually available on site. Overseas visitors who need an online real-name reservation should confirm a booking channel that accepts foreign passports.
How much time to allow
Allow about 1.5 hours for the complete main route, including Tiejian Shan (铁坚杉), Ditan (地坛), the Shennong statue, descent by Guandao (官道) and Baicao Yuan (百草园). If you mainly want the architecture and photographs, allow about 40 minutes; the short route does not climb the main stairway and covers less of the site.

Main sights
The 21-metre Yandi Shennong statue is the main sight on the hill. Near the entrance is Tiejian Shan (铁坚杉), an ancient fir tree estimated to be about 1,300 years old. A flight of 243 steps connects Ditan with the upper altar; choose between the two stairways according to your energy. Local cultural interpretation often connects the number of steps with Shennong’s birth date.
The foot of the steps is a good place to photograph the statue from below, while the view back from the top includes the altar, Ditan and distant mountains. Bell ringing, drumming, fortune-telling and divination are optional rather than required parts of the visit; ask on site whether any of these activities costs extra.
Who is it for?
Visitors interested in ancestral culture, architecture and ceremonial spaces can use Shennong Altar as a cultural stop near Muyu. Visitors with limited mobility, knee problems or young children may prefer Ditan and the short photography route before deciding whether to climb all 243 steps. If you prefer primeval forest and streams, leave more time for the nearby natural attractions.
Build your day
About 40-minute quick route
Walk from the car park to Ditan Square. First take in the overall composition of the statue and steps, then see Tiejian Shan before returning to the entrance the same way. This route skips the full climb and works well when Shennong Altar is combined with other areas around Muyu.
About 1.5-hour complete route
See Tiejian Shan first, then continue to Ditan. Go up the gentler Mindao (民道) to the Yandi Shennong statue, descend by the steeper Guandao, pass through Baicao Yuan and leave the site. The uphill and downhill directions are clear; take care on the steps, especially in rain or when the site is busy.
Combining it with Muyu’s nearby sights
Shennong Altar can share a day with Guanmen Mountain and Tiansheng Bridge, with the order set by that day’s opening and parking conditions. Keep enough time for the steps rather than rushing to complete all three stops. If someone in the group is not suited to a long climb, keep the visit to Ditan and the statue viewpoint.

Driving and parking
Navigate to “Shennong Altar Scenic Area Parking Lot”; the entrance is beside G209. Parking is usually free and generally has a reasonable number of spaces. Slow down early where the mountain road meets the national highway, park, and enter through the single main gate.
From Muyu Town
You can hire a car from Muyu Town. The attractions are spread out, and an on-demand taxi may not be convenient, so arrange the vehicle for Shennong Altar together with the rest of your Muyu-area itinerary. After leaving, return to town for a meal or continue to the next stop.
Know before you go
Steps and on-site activities
The core sights are above the steps, and the complete route requires some knee and cardiovascular effort. If the steps are slippery or someone is tiring, stay within Ditan and the statue-viewing area. Bell ringing and drumming may cost extra; ask the price before choosing them.
The cultural interpretation includes the Five-Coloured Stones and square-and-round design. Treat these as local explanations of the altar space. Photograph from open areas rather than climbing the altar structures; activities, commercial stalls and management arrangements follow the day’s on-site conditions.
Food and supplies
Food choices near the scenic area are limited, while Muyu Town has more restaurants. Short-route visitors can eat in town before coming; for the complete route, bring water and wear shoes suitable for steps. Shennong Altar can share a day with Guanmen Mountain and Tiansheng Bridge, but the three areas still have separate ticketing, entrances and opening arrangements.
