Confirm which lake areas are open
Dajiu Lake is a high-mountain wetland with nine lakes arranged along the water system. The core areas of Lakes 4, 5 and 6 are currently closed for ecological restoration, so plan around Lakes 1–3 and Lakes 7–9. Check the departure-day notice for any reopening information.
Single-entry pricing varies by visit date; check the current ticket price when booking. The park is also included in the CNY 299 per person, five-day Shennongjia six-area pass. Reservations are best handled through the relevant official Shennongjia scenic-area WeChat account; overseas visitors should confirm the passport-based purchase route in advance through an official or OTA channel that accepts foreign passports.
Two ways to visit
Drivers can navigate to “Dajiu Lake Scenic Area (Northeast Gate)” and make Lakes 1–3 a short self-drive route. To reach Lakes 7–9 and the deer park, go to the visitor transfer centre in Pingqian Ancient Town, take the scenic-area bus, and then change to the lakeside sightseeing train. The Pingqian transfer system costs about CNY 56–70 per person; the exact items and price are set at the day’s ticket office.

Lakes 1–3 or Lakes 7–9
Lakes 1–3 suit drivers who want short stops, lakeside boardwalks and a quick view of the wetland. They are practical when time is limited or you are passing through. Lakes 7–9 require the transfer system and suit visitors willing to give half a day to lakeside walking and views; keep the two transport plans separate.
Morning mist, reflections and the deer park
Morning mist needs an early start and suitable weather. Clear weather turning cloudy, or the first clear period after rain, can create better conditions, but it may not appear on any given day. The deer park is a family-friendly choice for observing animals; deer feeding, pet entry and related charges can change with on-site management.

2–3-hour self-drive route
Enter through the Northeast Gate and drive within the Lakes 1–3 area, stopping at the lakeside boardwalks and open viewpoints before leaving according to the day’s road arrangements. This route suits visitors who mainly want wetlands and lake views or need to continue to another part of the region. It does not include the currently closed Lakes 4–6 or the transfer-only Lakes 7–9 and deer park.
4–5-hour transfer route
Start at the Pingqian Ancient Town visitor transfer centre. Take the scenic-area bus in, change to the lakeside sightseeing train for Lakes 7–9, and then follow the open route to the deer park. Return to the transfer centre by bus afterward. Include the bus and train connection time in the half-day plan; once you finish in the lake area, do not count on finding a private-car route into the transfer-only zones.
Early start and return
The Pingqian visitor centre usually begins operating at about 06:30, and morning mist is often worth looking for around 07:30–08:00, weather permitting. Confirm the first departure and that day’s opening through 400-994-2333 or the on-site notice. If the mist does not appear, continue with the Lakes 1–3 short route or the Lakes 7–9 transfer route rather than letting the wait disrupt your onward transport.

Entering through Pingqian’s transfer system
The Pingqian Ancient Town visitor centre is the transfer starting point for Lakes 7–9 and the deer park. It is about 10 kilometres from the scenic area’s Northeast Gate. Staying in Pingqian shortens the morning trip to the centre, but once inside the lake area you still need to follow the scenic-area bus and sightseeing-train process.
Without a car, you can take a bus from Badong Station to Pingqian; the bus station is downstairs after leaving the station, the journey takes about two hours and the fare is about CNY 50. From Xingshan Station, first go to Xingshan Bus Station, take Route 808-1 to Muyu in about 1.5 hours for around CNY 25, then change vehicles or hire a car to Pingqian. Confirm schedules, ticketing and the final transfer before departure.
Driving, hired cars and parking
A private or hired/shared car is practical for the mountain roads around Dajiu Lake. For the short self-drive route, navigate to the Northeast Gate and the permitted Lakes 1–3 area. Private cars may drive only within the self-drive area allowed that day; for zones that require a transfer, park in Pingqian first and enter by scenic-area transport. The mountain roads have many bends, so slow down in the early morning and in rain or mist.
Know before you go
Temperature, walking and changing access
Dajiu Lake is at about 1,730 metres, with a noticeable difference between morning and evening temperatures. Carry a warm layer for the boardwalks and while waiting for transfers. Lakes 4–6 are currently closed, and lake access, transport and sightseeing-train arrangements may change. Read the notice before leaving and follow the open areas on arrival; never cross barriers or enter a closed lake area.
Morning mist, lake reflections and wildlife viewing all depend on weather and on-site conditions. Stay on the boardwalks and within safe areas when taking photographs, and follow the deer park’s rules for that day. If travelling with a pet, confirm in advance whether entry is permitted that day and what restrictions apply to the deer park and transfer vehicles.
Food and supplies
Food choices inside Dajiu Lake are limited. Accommodation and meals are more convenient in Pingqian, so bring water and simple snacks before setting out. Local choices include tudiaoguo hotpot, cured-meat hotpot, cold-water fish and high-mountain potatoes; check the price before ordering, as temporary on-site food services can vary.
