How Shennongjia is laid out
Shennongjia is not a single park that can be covered through one main gate. It is a group of scenic areas spread across the mountains. Muyu Town is the main base for the southern and western routes, while Pingqian Ancient Town is closer to Dajiu Lake. Arriving at Xingshan Station and leaving from Shennongjia Station lets you combine the high-speed rail, accommodation and mountain roads into a one-way loop.
The six-area pass costs CNY 299 per person and is valid for five days. It covers Shennongding, Dajiu Lake, Shennong Altar, Guanmen Mountain, Tiansheng Bridge and Tianyan. Reservations are made through the official “Shennongjia Scenic Area” WeChat account, which usually releases tickets for the third day ahead at 20:00. Summer weekends can sell out; overseas visitors should confirm their passport and booking route in advance through an official or OTA channel that accepts foreign passports.
How much time to allow
With only one day, keep the plan around Muyu Town. With two days, you can add Shennongding and give the mountain roads and viewpoints the time they need. A three-day, two-night trip works well as a core loop from Xingshan through Muyu, Shennongding, Pingqian and Dajiu Lake before returning to Shennongjia Station. Most core areas currently operate around 07:30–17:30 from April 1 to October 7 and around 08:00–17:00 from October 8 to March 31; Dajiu Lake has its own operating arrangements, so check the notice before departure.

Choosing among six landscape types
Choose by the experience you want most. Tiansheng Bridge is for canyon scenery, waterfalls and an easy hike; Shennong Altar focuses on cultural scenery and ceremonial steps; Guanmen Mountain suits families looking for educational stops that can be visited by car. Shennongding brings together high-elevation forest, meadows and long views; Dajiu Lake is for wetlands, open water and morning mist when weather allows; Tianyan combines high-elevation forest and cave routes in the Hongping direction.
Choosing for your group
Nature lovers and photographers can make Shennongding and Dajiu Lake the main line, but neither morning mist nor a sea of clouds is guaranteed. Families may prioritize the panda house at Guanmen Mountain and the deer park at Dajiu Lake. Hikers can then assess the Shennong Valley trail; its valley-floor route should not be planned as a normally open activity. For anyone with limited mobility or young children, assess the steps at the cultural altar and the high-mountain trails separately.
Build your day
One day around Muyu
A Muyu day can run from Tiansheng Bridge to Shennong Altar and then Guanmen Mountain. Give the morning to the canyon trail, move to Shennong Altar in the afternoon, and finish at the panda house or along Guanmen Mountain’s valley road. The three areas are relatively close, but each has its own entrance and parking arrangements, so adjust the order to the day’s opening, queues and parking conditions.
Two-day core route
On the second day, enter Shennongding through the East Gate and follow the high-mountain road toward Pingqian. Choose stops such as Jinhouling (金猴岭), the Shennong Valley Viewpoint (神农谷观景台), the Watchtower and Banbi Rock, then leave through the West Gate. If the Shennong Valley floor trail is not open, keep the visit to the viewpoint and do not shorten safe driving time just to reach Dajiu Lake for morning mist.
Three days and two nights
After renting a car at Xingshan Station, choose one or two of Tiansheng Bridge, Shennong Altar and Guanmen Mountain on the first afternoon according to your arrival time, then stay in Muyu. On day two, take the linear East Gate–West Gate route through Shennongding and stay in Pingqian Ancient Town that evening. Enter Dajiu Lake early on day three: arrange Lakes 1–3 within the permitted self-drive area, and use the transfer system for Lakes 7–9 and the deer park. Continue to Shennongjia Station afterward to return the car and catch your train.
Get there
Stations, towns and mountain roads
A rental car or private car is the most practical way to visit Shennongjia because the scenic areas are spread out and the connections often involve mountain roads and several kilometres of driving. Xingshan Station and Shennongjia Station work as the two ends of a one-way route. Muyu is best for supplies and accommodation, while Pingqian shortens the morning journey to Dajiu Lake.
Without a car, use a hired car or shared transfer as the main alternative. Public-transport services are infrequent and stop information is not consistent, which limits how much you can cover in one day. If you must use public transport, arrange the connections from the station to the towns and between the towns first; do not plan the scenic areas around an assumption that a vehicle will always be available.
Parking and departure timing
Except for the Dajiu Lake transfer zone, the main scenic areas usually allow you to drive to their own parking areas. Mountain roads have many bends, and entrances and parking areas can become congested in peak periods. On your departure day, allow time for leaving the mountains, refuelling or returning the car, and reaching the high-speed train; mountain-road travel cannot be estimated like a city drive.
Arriving and staying in Pingqian
Pingqian Ancient Town is a useful base for an early start at Dajiu Lake. The visitor transport centre is about a 5–10 minute walk from the town. Drivers can navigate directly to the town, and many guesthouses have parking. Evening activities and performances change with weather, visitor numbers and on-site arrangements, so treat them as optional rather than a fixed programme.

Weather, walking and safety
Mountain weather changes quickly, so carry rain protection and a warm layer even in summer. The high-mountain walks at Shennongding and Shennong Valley include climbs. Consider the 4.4-kilometre Shennong Valley floor route, with nearly 500 metres of elevation change, only if it is confirmed open that day. The trail to the 3,106.2-metre summit is closed; the highest point currently reachable is the Watchtower at about 2,926 metres.
Drone flights are prohibited throughout Shennongjia. Do not stay in the primeval forest or on high-mountain trails after dark, and stay on formal paths rather than walking into the meadows. If mist, rain, slippery ground or a temporary closure affects the route, switch to viewpoints that remain open.
Food and supplies
Muyu has the widest choice of accommodation, food and supplies. Pingqian is convenient for one night before an early start at Dajiu Lake. Food options are limited in more remote areas, so stock up in town on water and simple snacks; local dishes include cold-water fish, cured-meat hotpot and pan-fried potatoes.
