A linear high-mountain scenic area
Shennongding’s sights are spread along about 40 kilometres of internal road, and the usual visit does not require backtracking. Enter through the East Gate from Muyu and leave through the West Gate toward Pingqian, making it a natural transfer day between Muyu and Dajiu Lake. You can also drive in the opposite direction, from the West Gate to the East Gate.
Single-entry pricing varies; check the ticket price for your visit date. It is also included in the CNY 299 per person, five-day six-area pass. Opening hours are about 07:30–17:30 from April 1 to October 7 and about 08:00–17:00 from October 8 to March 31. Confirm reservations and any same-day changes through the scenic area’s official channel.
How much time to allow
For a drive-by visit focused on the high viewpoints and stone forest, allow 2–3 hours. First-time visitors who want to walk at Jinhouling and stop at the viewpoints should allow 4–6 hours. The stops are connected by mountain roads, so travel time cannot be estimated from the walking distances between city attractions.

Choosing the sights along the road
Jinhouling (金猴岭) is for primeval forest, streams and waterfalls. The Shennong Valley Viewpoint (神农谷观景台) looks down into a U-shaped canyon and passing clouds. The Watchtower is the highest mountain viewpoint currently accessible, while Banbi Rock combines stone formations, arrow bamboo and high-elevation forest. Tianji Ling (天际岭) and Taiziya (太子垭) are also along the route and can be added if time and weather allow.
Who is this route for?
Photographers can prioritize the Shennong Valley viewpoint, the Watchtower and Banbi Rock, but a sea of clouds and mist depend on the weather. Families looking for cooler air can choose shorter walks such as Jinhouling. Hikers should assess the Shennong Valley floor route separately; older visitors and anyone with knee problems may be more comfortable using the parking areas and viewpoints as their main stops.
Build your day
2–3-hour quick drive-through
Enter through the East Gate and follow the road to the Shennongding Watchtower. At about 2,926 metres, stop for the Huazhong Wuji (华中屋脊, “Roof of Central China”) marker and the mountain panorama, then make a brief stop at the Banbi Rock parking area if time permits before leaving through the West Gate. The 3,106.2-metre summit trail is closed, so this route does not include a summit ascent.
4–6-hour highlights route
From the East Gate, visit Jinhouling, the Shennong Valley viewpoint, the Watchtower and Banbi Rock in that order before leaving through the West Gate. Use Jinhouling for a forest and stream walk, and start with the viewpoint at Shennong Valley. Only consider the valley-floor trail if staff clearly confirm that it is open; the 4.4-kilometre route is not a fixed part of the day’s plan.
Stops and the mountain exit
You need to drive again between each stop, and parking can be tight or roads congested during holidays. If you are staying in Pingqian and continuing to Dajiu Lake, leave the high-mountain road before dark. If you are staying in Muyu, leave through the West Gate and then continue to accommodation and supplies; do not cut the return journey too close in order to add one more stop.
Get there
East Gate, West Gate and navigation
From Muyu, follow G347 to the Shennongding East Gate; this works well as the westbound section after a southern-route day. From Pingqian Ancient Town or Dajiu Lake, follow G209 to the West Gate for a reverse visit. Visitors without a car can use a hired or shared car to connect the multiple stops and reduce the pressure of mountain driving.
Driving and parking
The main sights have parking areas along the road, but in peak periods heavy traffic may mean you cannot park at the closest point. The stops are separated by winding mountain roads, so slow down before bends. Signal and weather can change in the mountains; downloading route information before setting out is useful.

High points, trails and weather
The trail to Shennongding’s 3,106.2-metre summit is closed. The Watchtower at about 2,926 metres is the highest point currently reachable. The Shennong Valley floor trail has been closed for ecological protection at times, so the viewpoint is usually the safer short option. Mountain weather changes quickly; bring a light jacket and rain protection even in summer, and do not continue deeper into the trail when the surface is slippery.
Drone flights are prohibited throughout the area. Do not remain in the primeval forest or on high-mountain trails after dark, and stay on formal paths. If heavy mist, rain or a temporary on-site control affects the route, finish the walk and leave along the open road.
Food and supplies
There are few food options along the Shennongding road. Buy water and simple snacks in Muyu or Pingqian before entering. Muyu works well for accommodation after a southern-route day, while Pingqian is convenient for continuing to Dajiu Lake the next morning.
