A high-altitude area in the Hongping direction
Tianyan is beside G209 in Hongping Town and has two entrances. The North Entrance is near Yanziya (燕子垭) and Feiyundu Caihong Qiao (飞云渡彩虹桥, Rainbow Bridge), making it the natural starting point for the landmark sights. The South Entrance is near Tianmenya (天门垭, a high-altitude viewpoint), where you can begin with high views and the chance of a sea of clouds. One-way traffic control may apply in peak periods; follow the on-site direction after entering.
The single-entry ticket is CNY 45 per person, and the area is also covered by the CNY 299 per person, five-day Shennongjia six-area pass. Holders of the Hubei Tourism Annual Card need to reserve in advance. Opening hours are about 07:30–17:30 from April 1 to October 7 and about 08:00–17:00 from October 8 to March 31. Confirm the entry arrangement and reservation route before departure.
How much time to allow
From the North Entrance, allow about 1.5 hours for Feiyundu Caihong Qiao and Yanzi Dong (燕子洞, a limestone cave). From the South Entrance, allow 2–3 hours for Tianmenya, Yanzi Dong and the forest boardwalk leading to Feiyundu Caihong Qiao. Driving from Muyu takes about 1.5–2 hours each way, so count the mountain-road journey separately from the time inside the scenic area.

Feiyundu Caihong Qiao, Yanzi Dong and Tianmenya
Feiyundu Caihong Qiao crosses a canyon at about 2,200 metres, with primeval forest below. Yanzi Dong stays around 12°C and is very dark; the visit takes about 10–15 minutes. Tianmenya is at about 2,328 metres and has a viewpoint and a Wild Man research exhibition.
Choose the South Entrance if high views and an early sea of clouds are your priority. Choose the North Entrance if you want to focus on the landmark bridge and cave. The forest boardwalk around Yanziya suits visitors willing to walk farther; a sea of clouds and sunrise depend on the weather.
Who is it for?
Photographers can prioritize Feiyundu Caihong Qiao, Tianmenya and the forest boardwalk. Families can use Yanzi Dong and the research exhibition as short stops. High altitude, the cool cave and the climbing sections of the boardwalk add to the physical demand, so choose between the two entrances according to the group’s ability rather than trying to rush through both ends.

About 1.5-hour North Entrance quick route
Enter through the North Entrance and drive to the parking area below Feiyundu Caihong Qiao. Follow the formal path to the bridge, then return to the car. Continue to the Yanzi Dong parking area for a short cave visit, and leave through the North Entrance. Count the walking time at the bridge and inside the cave in addition to the driving time.
2–3-hour South Entrance highlights route
Enter through the South Entrance and start at the Tianmenya viewpoint. Drive to the Yanziya area and park near the Yanzi Dong entrance. After visiting the cave, follow the signed figure-eight boardwalk for about 40 minutes to Feiyundu Caihong Qiao, then return to the car park. Leave through the exit allowed by that day’s traffic controls and road conditions.
Parking and one-way controls
Queues or congestion are possible near Feiyundu Caihong Qiao during holidays. After parking, use the formal path and do not stop randomly on the roadside. If one-way traffic is operating in peak season, follow the on-site direction; the North and South Entrances are not nearby alternatives that can be exchanged freely at any moment, so check the day’s traffic arrangement before choosing one.
Get there
The G209 mountain road
The drive from Muyu to Tianyan takes about 1.5–2 hours along G209, with many bends. A private or hired car is the practical choice for this distance. Tianyan is relatively separate from the other attractions, so calculate the connections to Muyu and Shennongding as mountain-road journeys.
Driving inside the scenic area
You can drive inside Tianyan, with parking near key stops such as Yanzi Dong and Feiyundu Caihong Qiao. Plan your stops around the two entrances and the formal paths. If one-way control is active or traffic near the bridge is heavy, finish the route you have already entered before leaving in the direction permitted on site.
Know before you go
Cold cave and changing weather
Yanzi Dong is about 12°C and very dark, so bring a flashlight and light jacket and stay on the formal path. Temperatures vary at high altitude, and rain may lead to a temporary closure. The 06:30–08:00 window or the first clear period after rain may offer better conditions for a sea of clouds, but the weather cannot guarantee a view.
Use open areas for photographs near Feiyundu Caihong Qiao and the mountain road, and follow barriers and local directions. If rain or mist increases, the boardwalk becomes slippery or traffic controls appear, shorten the visit to viewpoints that remain open rather than looking for informal paths. Hongping Town is a practical place for food and supplies after leaving.
Linking the rest of your day
Tianyan usually needs a separate half day or full day, and there are few nearby stops to combine around it. It can be weighed against Shennong Tianchi as a driving-direction choice, but the two are separate areas with no shared ticket or guaranteed seamless itinerary. Confirm the vehicle and accommodation location before the return journey.
