Building and visit length

Zhang Xueliang Former Residence is at 78 Chifeng Road in Heping District. The entrance is inside the courtyard, where visitors first pass statues of Zhang Xueliang and Zhao Yidi before entering the main building. Seeing the exterior and courtyard takes about 30 minutes; allow 1.5–2 hours for the floor displays, stairs, and theatre stage. This is a separately ticketed historic residence and does not share an entrance or ticket with nearby Porcelain House.

Tickets and opening

An adult ticket is about CNY80. Students and visitors aged 60 or above receive discounts, while visitors aged 70 or above may enter free under the relevant policy. Tickets can be bought through the official account, a ticketing platform, or on-site by scanning. Opening is around 9:00–18:00, with last entry at 17:30, but opening dates may change; check the day’s opening notice and any crowd-control arrangements before departure.

Highlights by floor

The first floor includes Chinese and Western dining rooms and a small theatre stage associated with Mei Lanfang. The second floor includes the bedrooms of Zhang Xueliang and Zhao Yidi, a military and political meeting room, and objects such as an antique piano and an old refrigerator. The third floor contains a family banquet and ballroom. The floors show different aspects of domestic life, social life, and historical context, making the residence suitable for visitors interested in Republican-era history, architecture, and interiors.

Architectural details and optional experiences

The Tiffany-blue spiral staircase, Baroque exterior, and courtyard entrance are key photo points. Follow the venue’s photography rules indoors. If immersive puzzle activities or Republican-era costume experiences are available, they are optional paid experiences and are not included in the basic admission ticket.

Build your day

A 30-minute exterior route

Walk from Chifeng Road to the courtyard entrance, see the statues and facade, then photograph the building from across the public road. If you do not enter, continue on foot to Porcelain House. This exterior route does not enter unopened floors, and courtyard photography is not a substitute for the main-building visit.

A 1.5–2 hour full route

After buying a ticket, follow the indoor route from the first-floor stage and public rooms to the second-floor bedrooms and meeting room, then the third-floor family banquet and ballroom before returning to the exit. Porcelain House is about a two-minute walk away, or you can continue along Chifeng Road to Jingyuan. The four buildings sell tickets separately, so allow time for an individual check-in and queue at each one.

Get there

Metro and walking

Take Metro Line 3 or 4 to Heping Road Station. From Exit D or E, walk about 5–8 minutes to 78 Chifeng Road. Navigate by the street number and the Zhang Xueliang Former Residence entrance; Porcelain House at No. 72 and nearby cafés are not the residence entrance.

Parking and walking in the district

Chifeng Road is busy and subject to one-way traffic management, with limited parking nearby. Driving to the door to look for a temporary space is not recommended. Use a legitimate shopping-centre car park and walk, watching for traffic, uneven surfaces, and queues.

Know before you go

Closing days and crowds

Weekend, holiday, and tour-group traffic can make the narrow stairs crowded. Weekday mornings are often better for viewing, but this does not guarantee a quiet visit. Confirm closing dates, temporary maintenance, guided tours, and optional experiences before buying a ticket.

Historical context and photography etiquette

The main focus is the building and its floor displays; immersive activities are contemporary experiences and do not represent the original historical appearance. If you are mainly interested in the architecture, allow time for the spiral staircase, theatre stage, and relationship between the floors. There are stairs between floors, so visitors with limited mobility can ask about access before entering. Follow venue rules for photography, video, and touching displays. If continuing to Jingyuan, Zhangyuan, or the Five Great Avenues, check each place’s ticketing and opening arrangements separately.

Tickets and discounts

Check the document requirements for adult tickets, discounted tickets, age thresholds for older visitors, and optional experiences separately. When platform prices change, use the actual ticket page rather than comparing with Porcelain House next door.

Where to go afterward

After leaving the residence, walk to Porcelain House or continue directly to Jingyuan. If you have bought a performance or combined ticket for Zhangyuan or Jingyuan, work backward from the order time instead of treating every residence as a building that can be entered at any moment.
