Plan at a glance

Three separate heritage sites

The UNESCO World Heritage property Capital Cities and Tombs of the Ancient Koguryo Kingdom comprises three city sites and 40 tombs. Guonei City, Wandu Mountain City and the tombs are in Ji'an; Wunu Mountain City is in Huanren, Liaoning Province. Changshou Tomb, the Gwanggaeto Stele and Wandu Mountain City are three of Ji'an's main stops. Plan transport between their separate locations.

Choose the type of site before the order

Changshou Tomb is best approached as a stone-built tomb; the Gwanggaeto Stele invites a closer look at its form and inscription; Wandu Mountain City involves walking uphill through a mountain site with palace remains. The official itinerary lists them as separate stops. Ji'an Museum is a separate venue that you can add if it fits your plans; it is not an indoor gallery within these three sites.

Choose your visit

See the stone structure at Changshou Tomb

Changshou Tomb, also known as General's Tomb, is built from more than 1,100 granite blocks, and its capstone weighs about 50 tonnes. The arrangement of stones is the most visible architectural feature on site. Focus on the exterior tomb structure; check on-site rules before entering any tomb chamber or taking photographs.

Read the Gwanggaeto Stele

The Gwanggaeto Stele was carved from a single block of breccia tuff. It stands 6.39 metres high and carries 1,775 characters across its four sides, covering Goguryeo's founding legend, King Gwanggaeto's deeds and the tomb-guard system. Take in the scale first, then look at how the inscription is laid out. If you want to read the text in detail, check whether interpretation or display materials are available on site.

Allow for the climb at Wandu Mountain City

Wandu Mountain City's wall perimeter is about 6,947 metres, with seven gate sites set along the mountain. A winding uphill road passes watchtowers and palace remains. The 6,947-metre figure describes the wall perimeter; follow the paths open to visitors. Weather and fitness affect how far you can walk.

Choose one site or several

If time is limited, Changshou Tomb and the Gwanggaeto Stele are about 2 kilometres apart and make a shorter pair of stops. Add Wandu Mountain City only if you can allow extra time for the uphill walk and transport between sites.

For a separate park visit to Guonei City's palace remains, see Goguryeo Ruins Park.

Build your day

Follow the official day-trip order

The Jilin tourism itinerary runs Ji'an Morning Market → Changshou Tomb → Gwanggaeto Stele → Wandu Mountain City → lunch on Huopen Street → Ji'an Museum. The three heritage sites and Ji'an Museum are separate destinations, so allow time for travel between them. Include town transfers and lunch in the schedule. Because the route includes the museum, schedule that visit on a day other than Monday. The three outdoor heritage sites are open on Mondays.

Allow time by site type

A Jilin provincial tourism itinerary recommends allowing 40–60 minutes per heritage site. For Changshou Tomb, the Gwanggaeto Stele and Wandu Mountain City, this gives a starting estimate of roughly 2–3 hours on site, excluding travel, waiting and additional time for the uphill walk at Wandu. A separate provincial itinerary allocates four hours to a broader Goguryeo heritage visit, which may include other sites. Treat these figures as planning guidance rather than fixed visit durations.

Arrange the return from the last stop

The day-trip reference continues from Wandu Mountain City to Huopen Street and then Ji'an Museum. If your car is parked at the morning market or another site, agree on a pickup point with the driver and arrange onward transport or a return to your starting point.

Get there

Navigate to each site separately

Changshou Tomb (General's Tomb), the Gwanggaeto Stele and Wandu Mountain City are spread across Ji'an's urban area and outskirts. Set a separate navigation destination for each. Changshou Tomb is about 2 kilometres from the stele; Wandu Mountain City is in the hills north of town and requires a separate transfer.

Arrange a vehicle for the mountain section

The drive from Ji'an Museum north to Wandu Mountain City takes about 10 minutes. From the railway station, morning market or another heritage site, navigate from your actual starting point. Confirm local buses or scenic-area transfers in advance; if using a chartered car or driving yourself, check each site's entrance and parking location separately.

Confirm transport from Tonghua to Ji'an

The Shenbai high-speed railway now serves Tonghua. In June 2026, Jilin's transport authority published a proposal for a bus-style customized passenger service between Tonghua and Ji'an and listed 0435-963979 for inquiries. Call to ask whether it is operating, where it picks up passengers that day, and what schedules and return options are available.

Know before you go

Plan around the October 2026 opening notice

A management-company notice sets hours at 08:30–16:30 for all four sites from 8 October 2026. Ji'an Museum closes every Monday; Changshou Tomb, the Gwanggaeto Stele and Wandu Mountain City remain open. The notice gives no last-entry time or current ticket price. Free admission in April 2026 applied only to the dates listed in that spring promotion.

Check weather and fitness before visiting Wandu

The route at Wandu Mountain City climbs along the slope, with winding paths, watchtowers and palace remains. Wear shoes with good grip and choose the uphill section according to weather and fitness. Confirm whether the mountain site has a temporary closure, follow heritage-protection signs, and ask on site about tomb access and photography. Arrange transport between sites separately.

Jilin's itinerary recommends May to October

A 2025 Jilin tourism itinerary lists May to October as the recommended season. Weather, trail conditions and temporary openings can change from day to day. If you need parking, a reservation or step-free access, confirm the arrangements before setting out.
