Local history inside the Science and Culture Center

Tonghua Museum is inside the Tonghua Science and Culture Center at the south end of Jiangnan Avenue. Its venue listing gives about 3,000 square metres of exhibition space, free admission and a general history exhibition. Search for “Tonghua Museum” when navigating and entering; other venues in the Science and Culture Center are separate stops.

Follow a long timeline of local life

The exhibitions cover the Stone Age, Shang and Zhou settlements, Goguryeo, Balhae, Liao and Jin, the Huifa tribe and the Anti-Japanese War. Tonghua's story includes early settlements along the Yalu, Hun and Huifa river basins, as well as objects and traces of daily life left by different peoples and regimes. Follow the dates on the labels to see how the area changed over time.

Choose your visit

Look for everyday objects in the history displays

The collection list includes pottery, porcelain, gold and silver objects, jade, metalwork and paintings and calligraphy. Start with labels about an object's material, use and place of discovery, then look at its date and region. Check the exhibit labels for what is on display during your visit.

Notice Goguryeo, Manchu and modern revolutionary history

The museum presents Goguryeo culture, Manchu culture and revolutionary history, and its building incorporates Changbai Mountain Manchu paper-cut motifs. Use the current gallery labels to find where each theme is shown and in what order to visit.

Check the collection list for named objects

The Jilin Provincial Cultural Relics Bureau's Grade-I cultural relic list includes a striped cotton hunting jacket used by Gao Zhihang during the Anti-Japanese War, a Contax I camera and a Warring States-period steatite mould for axe and mirror forms (斧镜范). Check the gallery labels to see whether these objects are on display during your visit.

Check temporary exhibitions and public programmes by date

The museum has hosted an exhibition of Anti-Japanese War archives in its second-floor hall and a spring-equinox programme in a fourth-floor education room. A municipal report from August 2026 also records visitors at an exhibition about Kong Fansen. If you are visiting for a temporary exhibition or programme, call first to confirm that it is still running and open to individual visitors.

For a separate visit to Manchu cultural displays in Tonghua, see Tonghua Manchu Culture Exhibition Hall.

Build your day

Choose one history theme for a short visit

The venue listing describes a general history exhibition spanning multiple periods. If time is limited, choose one theme—early settlements, Goguryeo and Balhae, or Anti-Japanese War history—and follow the galleries open that day. A provincial itinerary combines several museums into an approximately one-hour visit; ask the museum about its own floor route and visit time.

Visit the ruins park as a separate stop

A Jilin tourism itinerary places the museum in the morning and then continues to Wanfabozi Archaeological Site Park (万发拨子遗址). The two places can form separate stops on a half-day cultural outing. Check the park entrance on a map and confirm how to travel from the museum.

Get there

Navigate to the south end of the Science and Culture Center

The listed address is inside the Tonghua Science and Culture Center at the south end of Jiangnan Avenue; a provincial itinerary gives the street address as 5903 Jiangnan West Road. Search for “Tonghua Museum” and check that the map pin is at the Science and Culture Center, not another venue in the same complex, such as the library or art museum.

Check bus routes and stops

A 2025 Jilin tourism itinerary suggests Routes 16, 37 and 23 for reaching the Science and Culture Center. An older 2017 venue page also lists Routes 19 and 26. Use live transit information to check current stops, schedules and the last return service, or call the museum for recent arrival information.

Know before you go

Start with the venue page, then confirm hours

The venue page lists free admission and hours of 09:00–15:00, Tuesday to Sunday. It does not specify last entry, holiday arrangements or real-name registration and reservation rules. The older 2017 Science and Culture Center schedule applies to the complex, not to this museum alone. Call the office at 0435-3558989 to confirm opening and last-entry times for your date.

Ask about parking and step-free access

The museum's dedicated parking, accessible entrance, elevator and stroller route need confirmation. If anyone in your group needs a step-free entrance or elevator, call 0435-3558989 before travelling to ask which entrance and galleries are available.
