Plan at a glance
Location and access
Dongtou Scenic Area is in Dongtou District, Wenzhou. Dongtou's main island is connected to the mainland by a sea bridge, so the main attractions on the island do not require a ferry. Dongtou Passenger Transport Centre is a common transport anchor, while individual paid attractions have their own entrances and parking arrangements.
Driving from central Wenzhou via Lingni Causeway takes about 1-1.5 hours, and a car is the most convenient way to move around the island. You can also take a bus from Wenzhou South Station to Dongtou Passenger Transport Centre, or take S1 rail transit to Lingkun Station and transfer to Bus 9. You will still need additional transfers between attractions.
Tickets, hours and itinerary size
Public viewpoints such as Zhongyu, Qicai Dongtou Village and the Sea Moon Embankment may be free. Wanghai Tower costs about CNY 30, Xiandieyan about CNY 40-50 and Banping Mountain about CNY 30-50; each paid site sells its own ticket. Scenic areas usually open from about 08:00 to 17:00 or 17:30, while free streets may be passable all day.
Dongtou's attractions are spread out. One day is best used for one main line, while a first in-depth visit is better planned over two days. Free viewpoints, paid scenic areas, parking, viewing facilities and food do not share one pass; confirm each part of the route separately before leaving.

Zhongyu, Qicai Village and the Sea Moon Embankment
Zhongyu's "Little Erhai" is a public coastal viewpoint with a breakwater, a white piano and a sea swing. Qicai Dongtou Village is useful for viewing colourful houses and the coast from Banping Bridge or the village roads. The Sea Moon Embankment suits an evening walk, but parts of it may be under construction or in an adjustment period.
These stops work for short visits, photography and family trips, but water colour depends on weather, waves and light. It may look yellow after rain or a typhoon, so do not expect the colour in clear-weather photographs on every visit.
Banping Mountain and Xiandieyan
Banping Mountain focuses on sea cliffs and viewing paths, while Xiandieyan features rocks, a coastal walkway and open views over the sea. Both require steady footing on the coastal sections. Shorten the route during rain, fog, strong waves or construction.
Banping Mountain and Xiandieyan are separate paid sites with separate hours and tickets. They suit drivers, coastal photographers and visitors comfortable moving along slopes. With children, put the length of the path and the condition of the railings first.
Fishing villages and a slower coastal visit
Huagang Fishing Village, Dong'ao Beach and similar places can be free or low-intensity stops for fishing-village buildings, beaches and coastal roads. Seafood markets and restaurants require separate planning. Confirm both the purchase price and cooking fee before ordering.
Build your day
A one-day main line
With one day, you can combine Zhongyu's "Little Erhai," Qicai Dongtou Village, Banping Bridge, the Sea Moon Embankment and Dong'ao Beach. Adjust the order for the tide, light and parking that day. Dong'ao Beach works well in the evening, but a clear sunset is not guaranteed.
If the sea wind is strong or the water colour is poor, shorten the coastal stops and spend more time in Qicai Village or resting near Dongtou Passenger Transport Centre. Drivers should include the island's hilly roads and time spent finding parking between attractions.
A two-day route
On the first day, visit Zhongyu, Huagang Fishing Village, Wanghai Tower, Qicai Dongtou Village and the Sea Terrace. On the second day, go to Banping Mountain, the Sea Moon Embankment and Xiandieyan before returning from Dongtou. Plan paid sites and public viewpoints separately so you do not repeatedly turn back along the same road.
Xiandieyan and the Sea Moon Embankment may have construction, upgrades or partial closures. Confirm access before departure. If one site is closed, move the time to Huagang Fishing Village, Dong'ao Beach or another open coastal stop.
A self-drive island route
Drivers can combine Zhongyu, Xiandieyan, Dong'ao Beach, Qicai Dongtou Village, Banping Mountain and the Sea Moon Embankment into a one-day route. The island roads have slopes, and some attractions are not suitable for walking continuously from one to the next. After parking, you may still need to walk to the viewpoint.
An electric scooter suits short transfers, but Dongtou has many uphill sections. Confirm the vehicle's power and battery before renting. Taxis may be hard to call in some sections, so arrange the return from remote stops in advance.
Get there
Driving
Driving from central Wenzhou via Lingni Causeway takes about 1-1.5 hours. A car is useful for connecting the scattered attractions, but holiday traffic and parking demand are higher, so plan the first stop earlier.
High-speed rail, bus and the passenger centre
From Wenzhou South Station, transfer to a bus for Dongtou Passenger Transport Centre. Alternatively, take S1 to Lingkun Station and transfer to Bus 9. Public transport is suitable for reaching the main island, but continuing from the passenger centre to several attractions still requires buses, taxis or a rented electric scooter.
Island travel and parking
Attractions are spread out, so travel around the island by car, taxi or rented electric scooter. An electric scooter costs about CNY 50 per day. Parking at individual scenic areas is usually about CNY 5-10, and spaces are tight on holidays. Choose a rental with sufficient power, working brakes and a normal battery level.
Know before you go
Sea colour, waves and photography
Dongtou's sea colour is strongly affected by weather, waves and light. It may look yellow on rainy days or after a typhoon. Even clear weather does not guarantee a particular blue colour or a clear sea surface. When photographing at the coast, prioritise the surface underfoot, wind strength and the position of the railings.
Construction and separate admission
Xiandieyan, the Sea Moon Embankment and other sites may have renovation work or partial closures. Confirm the open area before departure. Public coastlines, free streets and paid sites such as Wanghai Tower, Xiandieyan and Banping Mountain are managed separately; entering one free location does not make the other locations free.
Food and seafood
Confirm prices separately at seafood markets, restaurants and cooking shops. Before ordering, ask about the seafood price, cooking fee and charging method. Some Dongtou roads are steep, so include the meal location and parking in the itinerary instead of driving into a congested or unfamiliar section just to find one restaurant.
